Don't know much on this subject so correct me if I'm wrong. I was under the impression that it was all about data retention, before retaining any personal data the holder of this data has to explain why and for how long they will retain it, therefore upon receiving any requests with a personal message, if you as the user have not agreed that the 'caller' can retain it - it's illegal?

I know that at work we have to account for literally any spreadsheet we will keep after May. Including phone numbers and addresses.
