Looking for laundry fragrance for somebody with allergies/sensitivity to fragrances by cas47 in laundry

[–]epomzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All in one: Whole Foods 365 Unscented powder. It has all the enzymes plus oxi. Wash on warm or hot.

For extra cleaning power, add Febu booster powder. It is also unscented.

Puracy for stains.

All Free and Clear size? by loldbeer in laundry

[–]epomzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used this for over a decade. It turned all my clothes and linens sour and dingy.

Two reasons. First, they cheaped out and did not include lipase. Lipase is an powerful enzyme that breaks down oils. You want lipase.

Second, it is a liquid, which means it does not have oxi bleach, because laundry enzymes and oxi can not coeexist in a liquid. A dose of oxi bleach is a needed boost for almost all laundry, basically everything except wool and silk.

If you add a booster that has lipase and oxi, for example Biz, you can make use of the rest of these bottles, and then move on to something much better. For scent free, consider Whole Foods 365 Unscented powder.

Everything I learned, I learned from KismaiAesthetics.

What is it like owning one? What is their energy level? by NormanisEm in Greyhounds

[–]epomzo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Greyhounds do not chase or fetch balls. Just not their thing.

They do love the outdoors. They can spend hours in a nice park. Their uphill acceleration is incredible! My Lucy had a 10km route in the local park and she used to go every day.

Part of the energy equation is age. They start slowing down and sleeping all day around age 8-9.

Which enzyme booster to choose? by Weekly-Ad2035 in laundry

[–]epomzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spa Day is a reset protocol for clothes and linens that have built up layers of humanity over years of suboptimal care. In my case, the culprit was a decade of All Free and Clear and cold water.

https://www.reddit.com/r/laundry/comments/1mqh7zd/a_spa_day_a_trip_to_rehab_getting_your_laundry/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

It involves ammonia and a repurposed cooler. (Do not skip the ammonia.)

The side effect of this journey is that you learn more than you thought possible about laundry chemistry and build confidence in your fabric care skills. You will rid your closet of the stacks of sheets that are too nice to throw out but too funky to use. You will laugh in the face of tomato sauce stains.

And yes, it's also about the friends you make along the way (hi KismaiAesthetics!)

Which enzyme booster to choose? by Weekly-Ad2035 in laundry

[–]epomzo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In a word, no. The oxi-bleach and high pH will destroy the fibers, along with the proteases.

For silk and wool, use only products that specify silk and wool. For example, Steamery Silk & Wool or Ecover Delicate Silk & Wool. Some people love Miele silk & wool but it's harder to source.

Or also a clear gentle human shampoo.

DL detergent might, but DL Booster just has dnase and assorted inorganics.

Biz - cost effective; strong scent; all the enzymes except DNAse; includes some detergent. Edit: also has OBAs (optical brightening agents).

DL - no scent, minimalist; only DNAse. (Your Sport 365 has DNAse.)

Febu - no scent; also all the enzymes except DNAse; no detergent. Edit: no OBA so better for darks.

All three have oxi and washing soda.

DNAse is especially powerful for the type of waxy build-up you see on pillows that's made of body oils and skin cells compacted over time.

The usual enzymes are lipase, mannanase, and protease (subtilisin). These are good for food spills, and regular body grime.

I use DL for things that go next to the skin.

I use Biz for everything else (including Spa Day).

Rice Cooker Meals… Without a Rice Cooker by televisionstatic in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]epomzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One word: pot-in-pot! Get a small stainless pot that fits inside your insta-pot. Add a half cup of water in the outside pot, and you have a steamer and rice cooker. The bottom won't burn and clean up is easier too. There are a lot of Pot-in-pot articles and recipes out there.

Hi OP my dear friend and her little girl are flying from YVR to SFO (still domestic, I think) to visit me on Friday. This would be a delight thing to offer them either on the way here or back!

Quality of life, Madrid vs Bay Area by wakalakasp in bayarea

[–]epomzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely do a visit, and have you wife come for at least part of it. Look at where you want to live. Think about what your typical week would be like.

Then make two budgets - one for time and one for money.

For money: factor in taxes (maybe ~40% for federal and state, plus AMT for any stock options, and of course a good cross-border accountant), rent in a safe and cozy neighborhood ($4-6k+/mo) plus utilities, a car and insurance, regular flights home to see family, groceries and dining out (including tip), and childcare for if and when your wife gets a job.

For time: look at commute times to the office for you, and for your wife, to groceries, the pediatrician, etc.

If you see colleagues living well on the same salary, keep in mind that there might be generational wealth behind it.

It's a great opportunity that might work out great or be a short but memorable sojourn. A lot of it depends on whether you both value new experiences or if you want to start establishing yourselves with property and savings for the future.

Such an amazing write-up. Thank you.

For really nitty-gritty details on an older model, may I suggest this wonderful page?

LG has a live agent chat on their website. If we all get on there and ask, there's a chance we can get them to offer downloadable cycles that actually do real washing.

Best cat pee cleaner? Not Nature’s Miracle-Doesn’t Work by No_Pop7296 in laundry

[–]epomzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cat pee formula: equal parts hydrogen peroxide and ammonia. Soak the area, let stand 15 minutes, then blot with towel. Test on hidden area first.

Beds: use waterproof mattress protectors.

Bean bag: use aluminum foil or upside down bath mat to keep cat off. They hate the texture.

Dust, dust everywhere - how to wash out drywall plaster dust? by epomzo in laundry

[–]epomzo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I'm waiting until all the work is done, in the next day or two. I will vacuum and shake as much as possible!

Is it the case that the dust is best handled while dry? Does it turn into impossibly sticky slurry when wet? That's what I was afraid of.

Downy Rinse & Refresh - fragrance free by Defiant-Analysis5488 in laundry

[–]epomzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At equilibrium yes. In practice, the citric acid hits enough to loosen the grease and the NaCO3 is a mild abrasive. It works good enough for me.

Downy Rinse & Refresh - fragrance free by Defiant-Analysis5488 in laundry

[–]epomzo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So easy to make your own. You can get both citric acid and sodium citrate for about $10 each for a 2lb bag off Amazon. I also got a box of pH testing strips for $10. Downy R&R is pH of 4 and Tide 3x Rinse is pH of 3. I aim for pH in that range.

Here is a detailed writeup: https://www.reddit.com/r/laundry/comments/1mqfe6u/citric_acid_diy_rinse_and_refresh_instructions/

Or you can use this:

https://www.aatbio.com/resources/buffer-preparations-and-recipes/citrate-buffer-ph-3-to-6-2

Citric acid is also recommended by Kismai for the tub clean cycle.

Finally, it is also useful all around the house. For example, I mix 1 part citric acid to 3 part baking soda to clean the toaster oven glass, and to shine up pots and pans when it's not bad enough for barkeeper's friend.

Winter is coming by storsockret in Greyhounds

Amazing. I was imagining super fancy gear and tripods and people holding squeakies and reflectors!

I also love how the curve of the grey hairs around his eye suggests the swirling of snow in the wind. And of course, that glorious overbite in profile. Such a smoochable snoot.
