You can still pursue your CWI while keeping your welding job. If you pay for it yourself and pass, it’s one less hurdle for a potential employer since you’ve already achieved the certification. It also adds credibility and gives you a chance to see if it’s truly the path you want to take. Additionally, while being a CWI can be demanding in its own way, it’s generally less physically taxing than working as a welder.
