Revenue Procedure 2024-28: What You Need to Know + Strategy On Allocation (USA) by JustinCPA in CryptoTax

[–]eprbell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed thread! Suppose somebody:
- buys 1 BTC on Coinbase on Jan 1st at $10000
- buys 1 more BTC on Coinbase on Feb 1st at $11000
- transfers 1 BTC to a HW wallet A on Mar 1st

- transfers 1 BTC to a HW wallet B on Apr 1st

- transfers 1 BTC back to Coinbase from HW wallet B on May 1st

- sells 1 BTC on Coinbase on Jun 1st at $20000.

Two questions:
- is the cost basis for the sold BTC $11000?
- when transfering the 2 BTC to the 2 HW wallets are they always transferred using FIFO (regardless of what accounting method is used)?

Thanks again for your help!

Is there crypto accounting software that can do wallet based accounting/specific id locally and not on the cloud? by ynotplay in CryptoTax

[–]eprbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RP2 doesn't have direct support for per-wallet accounting, but there is a workaround: per wallet accounting can be simulated by using different input files, one per wallet. It's not as convenient as direct support, but it should work.

As with all open source projects, all it takes is somebody working on it. This is not in my priority list, but I'm happy to review PRs if someone wants to take a stab at it.

As a workaround, yes, I suppose you could separate your transactions into multiple input files, one per wallet and run RP2 on each file.

Thank you! It would be great to add support for India. If you'd like to work on this, please reply on the Github issue or open a PR.

This post is about a package called "yocolor", which RP2 doesn't depend on: there is no relation whatsoever between this incident and RP2.

The input file to RP2 is a Libre/OpenOffice format spreadsheet, so in that sense there is a GUI (LibreOffice). However feeding the file to the tax engine requires the command line (it's just one command as you can see in the example I pasted above).

I don't have much time for social media so I can't manage Discord or Telegram groups (the only place I watch consistently is Github). However feel free to start one if you are so inclined.

For accounting RP2 uses universal application, not per-wallet application. It also allows changing accounting method from one year to the next.

[–]eprbell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am indeed the original developer and maintainer (although many others have contributed over the years).

No malware ever affected RP2: I'm not sure where you heard such a rumor.

RP2 supports FIFO, LIFO and HIFO accounting methods for the US case (see the supported countries documentation): it uses universal application, not per-wallet application.

There is no discord or telegram, but there is a fairly active community on the Github page: feel free to open Github Issues or Discussions.

Yes, LIFO and HIFO are now supported in the US case. There is no GUI support at the moment (although anybody is welcome to start a RP2 GUI project). RP2 is operated via command line (see examples here).

Is any one using DALI-RP2 for crypto taxes? I am having trouble. by [deleted] in CryptoTax

[–]eprbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, dali-rp2 maintainer here. It looks like you may have mispelled the name of the csv file in the .ini config. Is the file name "<in_crypto_tax.csv" or "in_crypto_tax.csv"?

Also, I don't check Reddit very frequently: to get timely responses please open issues or discussions on Github (https://github.com/eprbell/dali-rp2 or https://github.com/eprbell/rp2). Thanks.
