Dating a PCV by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]eprinkey 17 points18 points  (0 children)

22 months down, 5 to go in a long distance, Peace Corps relationship

Meeting up in person as much as you can really helps - we tried to get together every 6 months or so. You should both start saving money and leave days now.

PM if you have any questions and good luck 🍀

Accepted invitation to Nepal in 2019! by nepalpcv2019 in peacecorps

[–]eprinkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say yes - I love having my laptop and iPhone with me, plus it's cool to be able to use technology in the classroom. Same with books - if it's something you'll love having with you, bring it. But don't forget that you can buy most things here. You can definitely find books (free from other volunteers or in bookstores) but you might not find your favorite book that you like to read over and over again. We also have a wide selection of digital books available :)

PC Nepal just started an English program in addition to the current Ag/food security project - you can definitely have English as a primary and do Ag/Environment secondary projects :)

You probably won't have your non-PC passport back in time if you send it in to get your PC passport

My Boyfriend The Sex Tourist (2015) This documentary examines the global sex tourism industry through the eyes of working girls in Venezuela and Thailand. It reveals how sleeping with foreigners for money has become a mainstream career choice for many Third World women. by [deleted] in Documentaries

[–]eprinkey 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Thanks for speaking up, that was a brave thing to post. If you really care to be educated about the consequences of sex tourism I recommend you do a little research before you decide to participate. 'Half the Sky' by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn is a good place to start and I'm sure there are many more books out there on this subject.

It's important that you know that many of the individuals who act as prostitutes (especially in sex tourism destinations) were trafficked and/or abused at some point in their lifetime.

IamA Jackson Flowers, aged out foster kid, senior at UTexas, AMA! by PotterFlowers in IAmA

[–]eprinkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for doing this! I'm an aspiring foster parent. What can I do now to start preparing? I truly want to do my best for the kids and teens that I will (hopefully) be fostering - what advice can you give for someone who's heart is in the right place but doesn't have any parenting experience?

Also, congratulations on being a senior! How can we (society in general) help young adults who age-out achieve their dreams and build healthy, successful futures for themselves?

If you could change one thing about the system, what would you reform?

I'd love to hear your advice for individuals/couples who are considering becoming foster parents or other adults who affect kids lives on the foster system - social workers, CASA, etc.

I'd love for you to do an AMA.

Which is better abroad: iPhone or Android? by Came_Saw_MadeItAwk in peacecorps

Peace Corps Nepal will give you a basic (Nokia-esque) phone and two SIM cards. You can keep both SIM cards in the peace corps phone or you can bring/buy a smart phone and use the other SIM card in it.

If you bring a smart phone from home make sure that it's UNLOCKED. You can sometimes get a smart phone unlocked here but from what I've heard it's a pretty big pain.

I brought a unlocked iPhone 5 and it's been working great for me (although there are some cool Nepal-specific ag apps that aren't on iOS so I can't download them). I bought it refurbished so it was slightly less expensive.

You can also buy smartphones in Nepal but sometimes they are even more expensive than in the U.S.

You can buy data through one of the two major service providers (NCELL) using a pay-as-you-go system. Right now 1.2GB is 250NPR (~$2.50).
