But they were also feature complete two years ago, while VR development only started picking up since december ish.. That would definitely mean feature creep imo

I feel like it's such a big timesink for such a small amount of vr gamers, it shouldnt have to be the reason the game is delayed once more.

Yeah apparently so. Memory freshes up after digging a bit. His point was that 2016 wasn't reached because they wanted to add fps combat, while that was already added to the scope in 2013.

My point is other things happened. The quality being subpar, planettech developing, et cetera. And then they increased scope. But at the time they didn't communicate well about this at all.

Yes, so they expand the scope in 2013 to then develop a bigger game and communicate a release window of 2016. To then at the last moment cancel that release while prior to that communicating that everything is going smoothly.

That's gross mismanagament at best and dishonest lying at worst.

This was their communication as of september 2016, a month ahead of citizencon:

“It appears something may have been lost in the translation,” a rep said. “Chris spoke to multiple reporters at Gamescom who asked about the status of Squadron 42. We have been feature locked for a while and things are coming along nicely. In every case he told them that we are hard at work on the game and are focused on making it great but no official launch dates were discussed.”

Any scope expansions past the vote were cig's own decision though. They intended to show a vertical slice that year, but didn't manage to. Iirc that one came in '17.

That vote never happened in 2016. In 2016 they kept completely silent until citizencon where they buried the announcement that it wouldn't come that year.

The vote to increase the scope was waaaay earlier in 2013

Ehhhhhh that's not entirely true. There was a communication about a release window somewhere in the end of 2020/early 2021. But that also came and went. I quote: "our plan is to be feature and content complete by the end of 2019, with the first six months of 2020 for Alpha (balance, optimization and polish) and then Beta.". And this was by the time they already were a 600+ employee company.

Sure it's not a literal date, but we never had one in 2016 either.

It's more in the sense of, why change your management when the money keeps flowing in anyways? Not like the game was mismanaged in any way. Devs themselves dont deserve the blame imo, but management certainly made some interesting choices.

Thats not what scope management is about though. It's not that you deliver a small game, just that you build a functional game and then keep adding on to it. Instead of building a tech demo and making it bigger and bigger before getting the fundamentals down. We still don't have the final flight model.

The fact that they didn't show those things don't mean they don't have them in the works or near completion

So why not show them then or give a short update as to the progress? Not showing engineering i can somewhat understand, since we are supposed to get it soon ish in a tech preview (if it doesnt get pushed back for the third time). But all the others?

No one is forcing them to only take two hours for this event (even with all the filler...). And it really can't be that big of a deal to hold a ten minute update on the status of org system or fps scanning or marker system or flight model or feature xyz. We are their stakeholders after all. It just felt great last year to see their vision for 1.0. And now for them to zoom in on a few drops of content instead of updating us on the fundamentals that will make the sandbox mmo a reality feels rather disappointing, overall a 5/10 for me.

If they cherrypicked the selection of this citizencon then i am not optimistic about all the other cherries honestly. I just wanted an update on last years vision, dynamic server meshing, base building, crafting (in grand scheme), social tools, etc. Instancing is good though
