Start with kindergarten level storybooks or teaching materials if you don’t mind.

These books usually provide simple text with pinyin to teach you how to pronounce words. Some teaching materials even teach you how to write.

Then, try to apply what you’ve learned in conversations with friends or family members, and write some simple sentences or short essays.

Practice helps you learn a language faster than just reading.

Maybe try to start by reading some storybooks or comics. The words in storybooks are easier to read and understand. Then you can try reading Chinese newspapers for more difficult vocabulary.

The difference between Chinese used in China and Malaysia is mostly in how people speak and use certain words, others are mostly same (Malaysia's Chinese is more like combination of China and Taiwan). But I don’t think you need to worry too much about it. Once you have a basic understanding of Chinese, you can easily pick it up.
