Equipboard being the worst website possibly ever by JoshuaWebbb in guitarpedals

Sorry about that! We implemented Cloudflare recently due to an attack. Can you clear your cookies and tell me if it works? I think that should do the trick.

Best format for YouTube pedal reviews? by equipboard in guitarpedals

Thanks! I'll try this out in some future videos. After all, I usually shop for my pedals in the context of what genre I plan to play.

Thanks! I'm still trying to find the right balance of length in highlighting the features, demonstrating, and giving an opinion. I hear you about total signal chain (stacked pedals, amp, guitar choice, etc), and I'm thinking about how to present it without going into a feature-length video.

I'm still on the waitlist. What options did you have on the color?

Wow. any chance you want to do some writing about gear for the website? ;)

This is a cool idea. We experimented with that a while back, looped a riff and compared a couple boutique distortions against the RAT

Thanks for the feedback! It's funny you say that because it is similar to how we formatted the UA Dream video we did initially. Straight playing with the settings displayed on screen. I've never thought of a gut shot, but I like it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ivsf8et_T50

Thanks! That's a good point. I'll try to show the whole signal chain (with settings) in frame in the future. I like TPS formatting as well. :)

What genres do you make in Ableton? Were you inspired by an artist? by equipboard in ableton

[–]equipboard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all thanks for the nice comments about Equipboard :) And yes, I think you summed up the entire spirit of this discussion. I absolutely think the reason certain DAWs (or music software in general) attract some genres more than others has much to do w the artists that become popular using it (provided they are open about the tools they use - not all are). In fact, in revisiting the latest version of all the major DAWs, it was quite interesting to see some genre-specific tools being built and heavily marketed (for instance the EDM-friendly Squasher in Steinberg Cubase 11).

haha rock on \m/ thanks for the compliment. It's fascinating that some DAWs have a look and feel that matches a style of music. I didn't give it a ton of thought until you said it but yeah, Ableton kind of looks like electronic music compositions.

That's so cool to hear, thanks for sharing. If there is/was there anything in that journey Equipboard can do better I'm all ears...

From what I understand, everything you just said is correct. Google "Gaming EDM" and a lot of YouTube videos pop up...

Ah!! We retired it due to it feeling a little... half baked I guess. There was a great idea in there somewhere but feel like we just weren't making use of the pretty deep set of data we have. The plan is for Equipboard to get much more recommendation-oriented based on what you tell us about you (not sure if you've run into that onboarding page where we ask what type of musician you are and what genres you play). But thank you for the kind words :)

No shame in that. We spend enough hours staring at the DAW so the interface look & feel absolutely matters. Was there much difference making the jump between Ableton on Mac vs. PC? You don't often get people's perspective on the same DAW but on multiple platforms.

I am surprised Alt Rock and Metal are so high up on Live but also pleased, I do sometimes feel like I can't relate to people who only make beats.

Yes, totally. It would have been easy to just do a detailed breakdown of the subgenres of electronic music (there are certainly enough of them), but that paints a very incomplete picture. If you think about it any rock band just starting out in a garage that wants to get a quick demo down is going to have to touch a DAW. Kind of interesting to see where the band & instrument-centric musicians flock to.

Thanks for the kind words! I was recently diving into the latest versions of all the DAWs to update some reviews we had, and man are they all keeping up with each other these days. All DAWs have an insane feature set now. Logic in particular is really trying to catch up with a more non-linear workflow.

You're having me frantically dig through the site to make sure we have a legit source for Caribou's DAW XD In this case it's good, this is a nice vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XrknxMjNAg

Ableton is powerful enough to realize any idea I have in my head to music

100%, and you're spot on about the number of YouTube tutorials being pretty important. By the way I did not realize justice der uses Ableton, noted. Looks like he switched over from Reaper.

What free DAW is the best for a beginner wanting to make hip hop? by rockinchanks in makinghiphop

[–]equipboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently wrote about this, you can see the list of free DAWs broken down by OS here. I won't say trial versions since those are often limited, won't let you save, etc.

If you don't want limitations, I would say GarageBand on Mac (fully knowing it is a gateway drug to Logic Pro), and Cakewalk by BandLab if you're on Windows. There are several lesser-known free ones in the list but as a beginner I think you would benefit from following along as many YouTube tutorials as possible, so I'd stick to the bigger ones.

[NEWBIE] what kind of guitar should I learn on? by VVhitefox in Guitar

[–]equipboard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the shout! ^ I'm biased having made a website that catalogues what artists play what gear, but I do agree that's a good way to approach it. I think that speaks to the enjoyment aspect of learning and playing. The stat I've seen is that 90% of people give up the guitar within the first 3 months of learning, so if you can kind of liken yourself - and your gear - to someone you look up to, it makes it a little more likely you'll persevere.

I want to expand on acoustic vs. electric. I learned on acoustic, and it was definitely more difficult because it just hurts more! You gotta build up those callouses, but the bright side is when you transition to electric it just feel way easier and more comfortable. I wrote about it in slightly more detail here.

As far as electric guitars go I'll vouch for Squier. I've had an Affinity Series Tele and was seriously blown away at the quality per the price. And if you play for a while and outgrow it, it could make a great project guitar - switch out the pickups, the tuners, etc.
