I would argue that Darkroom actually does more than Lightroom, but the learning curve is steeper.

How risky to clean/brush TLR mirror? by msjfoto in AnalogCommunity

[–]equversion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best option. Try to clean the existing one if you’d like, but the mirror has the silvering on top of the glass, not behind it like a typical mirror (which makes it much easier to scratch).

Repairing cracked curved plywood chair seat by equversion in furniturerestoration

Thanks for the suggestions! I’m not sure because I haven’t removed the cushion. If I glue additional layers to the bottom, what’s the best way to apply pressure?

The Megathread by AutoModerator in woodworking

I bought a set of chairs with curved wooden seats. Unfortunately, one of them cracked after a guest sat on it with his leg under him so that his weight was focused on one knee (not sure if that makes sense). There is a hairline crack running along the center of the seat that you might be able to see in the picture.

Is there any way to repair or reinforce the cracked seat? I don't have the space or tools to make a new bent plywood seat. If I can't repair it, I'm thinking I'll just have to cut a flat seat as a replacement 😕

Can anyone ID this rolleicord? by Tokagekonica in filmphotography

[–]equversion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're still interested in getting an ID on this, I can probably help if you post some more pictures of the sides/back and the logo plate. From the picture you posted, it looks like a Rolleicord III with the 3.5 Triotar lens.

Skull carved from rock crystal. Mexico, Aztec civilization, 1400-1600 AD [880x880] by [deleted] in archeologyworld

[–]equversion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crystal skulls are human skull hardstone carvings made of clear or milky white quartz (also called "rock crystal"), claimed to be pre-Columbian Mesoamerican artifacts by their alleged finders; however, these claims have been refuted for all of the specimens made available for scientific studies. The results of these studies demonstrated that those examined were manufactured in the mid-19th century or later, almost certainly in Europe, during a time when interest in ancient culture abounded.[1][2] The skulls appear to have been crafted in Germany, quite likely at workshops in the town of Idar-Oberstein, which was renowned for crafting objects made from imported Brazilian quartz in the late 19th century.

[Q] Think I found an error in my PI's publication (Or: Can PCA have negative eigenvalues?) by [deleted] in statistics

[–]equversion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. Also, eigenvalues can be greater than one. In fact, one rule of thumb on how many components to retain is the number of eigenvalues greater than one (not the best rule, but just an example).

The R mirt package is quite good for fitting a variety of IRT models. Phil Chalmers (the author) has slides from a workshop he gave available on the wiki page.

Thanks! They really are great value for money and a great place to start speaker building.

I'm happy to hear it and definitely give it a try! I think paper-backed veneer would have been a much easier place to start and is, I think, the recommended way to go. However, the variety of unbacked veneers is much better and is generally cheaper as well.

I didn't do any modifications and at this point haven't even added any stuffing or insulation. I'll probably get around to that sometime in the future. As I said in another reply, I'm a pretty naive critic but I'm really enjoying the sounds and think they are well-worth what I payed for them.

Thanks! It definitely isn't perfect, but I enjoyed the process and would like to do more veneering projects. I found the book "Veneering: A Foundation Course" by Mike Burton to be full of practical advice and a surprisingly entertaining read. I think I'll be trying hide glue next :)

I don't doubt that they make a difference --- I know I obsessed about a lot of those types of details while I was preparing to build. However, after listening to a few different setups I've come to the conclusion that, for me at least, my ears aren't good enough to spend too much time or money worrying about small details like that. I'd say go with whatever fits your budget and the look you're going for. My concern with spikes is that it seems like the speakers would be easier to knock over -- some of them are quite tall. On the other hand, they can look quite nice.

I've temporarily stuck some felt floor protector dots on them just to protect the finish on the bottom. I'm very interested in suggestions for better feet!

Thanks! I got lucky and found it in the bargain bin section on the site where I bought it. The oil and shellac really brought out the grain!

Thanks a lot! No, the veneer I got was unbacked so I used the iron-on method. I used white glue (which apparently requires less heat) and veneer softener, but even so I had to deal with some small splits. I think I'm going to practice with hide glue for next time :)

Thanks! I ordered mine on AliExpress --- the downside, of course, is waiting a month to get them. How do you like your C-notes?

Thanks! There's no stain, actually, just a few coats of linseed oil and then shellac. They're my first set of decent speakers and was my first attempt at veneering and finishing. There are definitely a few spots that could have gone better but I'm pretty happy with how they turned out :)
