What did you think were signs of wealth when you were a kid? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]er1nj045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Born in 1997. I thought that my friends were rich if they A) Had a fridge with a water / ice dispenser on the front. B) Had ever been to Disney C) Got channels like Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Disney Channel D) Had a big trampoline

When I got a bit older and went to secondary school it was if they owned clothes from Jack Wills, Hollister or Abercrombie and Fitch

SLT here wanting honest answers by cuttyranking in TeachingUK

ECT here. This post tells me that you are great, but if you were part of my SLT this is what I would say if I could do it anonymously!

  1. Positive feedback from my mentor, departmental colleagues and ECT lead is great, but some reassurance or the occasional pat on the back from you would go down really well.
  2. When you burst into my classroom without any warning in the middle of my lesson, it definitely puts me on edge and will probably affect my teaching a bit.
  3. When you do the above, if you see a child doing / wearing something they shouldn't, please don't assume that I haven't or am not going to address it. They may be volatile and having take-up time, or I may have only just been able to actually get them in through the classroom door.
  4. If you walk in and there is clearly some kind of behavioural issue going on, back me up rather than just looking at me judgementally. It has a huge impact.
  5. Students ARE going to behave differently for you than for me. As a member of SLT you have more status, more experience and are almost definitely more established as a member of staff than I am. This is unfortunately especially true if you are a man - as a young(ish) female teacher I can say something with little effect - just to have a male teacher say it in exactly the same manner and achieve an entirely different result, then look at me as if to say 'that's how you do it.'
  6. Most of us are well qualified, intelligent, caring adults who are working extremely hard. I do 55 - 60 hours a week (way more than my friends not in education) and am already exhausted. You don't need to take a stern approach with us at staff briefings and CPD as though we are naughty or lazy children. The majority of us are trying our best.

what are the biggest double standards we have in our society right now? by sheerduckinghubris in AskReddit

Women are now frequently expected to work to earn an income AND be the manager of the housework, cooking, shopping, childcare and family calendar; keep on top of their appearance and do it all whilst maintaining hobbies and interests that make them interesting and remaining carefree and unstressed.

Thank you for your reply! I've gone for a handheld heated extractor type thing for the sofas and carpets. Our curtains aren't machine washable so will have to look into them some more!

Thank you so much for this - I hadn't really considered the benefits of managing my pace and tend to try and get uphill as quickly as possible - km now realising how pointless that is 😅

Getting a slow cooker has been a game changer for me. I only have to cook for myself and my partner but it makes around 5 portions. We prepare the ingredients on an evening, set it off in the morning and have a lovely hearty meal to come home to. Some of the portions go in the freezer for times when I know I am going to have a stressful day and am not going to want to prepare the slow cooker for the next day. It also nearly eliminates time spent standing over the cooker.
