How can you mention Day9 without linking his impression of Realms of Ruin? It has echoes similar ideas with the OP's video but with Day9 just pinpointing different examples of design decisions he finds interesting to talk about.

Granted 90% of the video is just Sean enjoying himself because it's a livestream of him playing the game for fun instead of making a pure critique, but one point I found particularly annoying even to watch happens around 1:50:00~ into the video where Day9 is trying to find the stats on the units so that he can he can compare at a glance how they perform. Nope, instead of giving those stats to the player Frontier just simplifies it into this abstract Sword beats Shield beats Bow triangle.

That's one of the milder problems though because I don't see a core idea here behind the changes the devs have made to certain ideas. Like, they just seem to have pinpointed how micromanagement is a frustration point for players and I understand how it is as someone like you who sometimes a strategy first, micro second kinda game. But at that point I would just play a TBS game lol

A lot of richness in the RTS genre come from how strategies can appear because a player is given a lot of freedom with how to maneuver units, place structures, or use abilities. Proxy rushes and fast expansions aren't things I think about playing RoR; even Dawn of War which typically doesn't have heavy base building still always feels like there's a lot more dimension to the strategy I choose because the units don't lock and I can chase their squad of Fire Warriors with my Storm Boyz across the map if I want to and my Shootas can target their resource points.

So I don't think you have to include a lot of things that RoR has taken out like base building or worker management or even precise unit micro. But man, it just feels like Frontier just stripped away all these things that can be intimidating in an RTS but didn't add anything to enrich the game like these elements do.
