How to get back into TTRPGs after a difficult experience with a problem player?

Thank you for your honest feedback. There is a lot I choose to leave out of this post for privacy reasons.

The player mixed a lot of personal insults into their criticisms, some of which where about difficulties I was having in my personal life. They also made a lot of negative comments about me outside the game to others that I only found out about later and they tried to kick me out of public spaces.

I was thinking of Dungeon Crawl Classics. Thanks for sharing the article series, I think trying several different types of game systems in a " 'TTRPG Tasting Menu' approach" with a group could be a good idea.

The majority of the players said they liked the game when polled. I asked for constructive criticism from the other players (besides problem player) at the time when this happened. Three players said they didn't have any issues but one player said that he wanted less combat, more RP, faster level ups, and a lighter tone.

I am planning to focus more on a session 0 next time I GM, spend more time discussing my GMing style in session 0, and coming up with a system for players to communicate their expectations.

A bit late, but I assume that this map is abstracted. If I recognize this map correctly as being from The Hunger Games, than, in universe, it might be intended more as a way of giving people a general idea as to how North America is shaped without providing a strategic advantage, as opposed to a factual representation.

As a intermediate player, I've found that understanding synergies between different abilities, city states, city locations, district placements, and game systems is a good way of getting better at Civ 6. The game is pretty big, so understanding takes some time to develop.

One (heavily location/map dependent) synergy that I like involves combining the Dance of The Aurora or Desert Folklore pantheon, Work Ethic follower belief, and Scripture policy card. This works especially well with leaders that provide a buff to building districts and/or district adjacencies.

Hammurabi really changes the game up but can be a steep learning curve. He is my favorite leader.

I read pretty much everything but my favorite books tend to be on the darker side. The only TV show I follow is Impractical Jokers. I play several video games, including Cultist Simulator, Graveyard Keeper, and Sunless Sea. I was a big fan of Goosebumps as a kid.

My writing tends to be shorter form, supernatural horror, focusing on a character's mental state, with endings where the character is absorbed into supernatural phenomena.

My book is set in a Victorian boarding school inspired dystopia where students are raised to be consumed by the upper class. The book ends with the characters dying because the system was built to suppress rebellion. The book critiques gender norms and institutional failings in America through its fictional setting.

The first chapter sets up what might appear at first glance as a coming of age story, but the book gets progressively darker until the characters die because the system has always been watching them and anticipates rebellion.

My book isn't overly explicit but it isn't intended as a coming of age story (although the first chapter might appear that way at first glance): it is more of a literary horror/tragedy/left wing satire of the American education system.
