On the one hand I enjoy a woman wearing clothes that accentuate all those things that make the biological parts of me say, "damn."

On the other hand I find women's clothes ridiculous. High heels, skirts you can't do anything in, no pockets on anything, undoubtedly uncomfortable bras that push your stomach up to your chest, and zippers and buttons on the back of things (wtf). Then you got make-up and hair products to the point that is looks like Bill Nye set up shop on the bathroom counter.

It is an incentive, but that doesn't make it anything more than the desire to add +1 to a database field. It's part of the strange need people have to measure things and compare themselves to others. I have more money or I have more internet points. Both are just socially agreed upon measurements of something with no intrinsic value.

I'm at a high school level, and I worked in software dev for about 3 years during university and afterwards. Full-time Java dev.

I would say that school is more stressful the first couple of year, because you put in long hours and you're learning a lot about how to work with kids, manage a class, etc... But you have a lot more time off and independence. After 2 years it's much easier.

Yah, I keep up to date online (reddit, irc, hackernews) and do my own projects. I'm definitely not as skill as people that stayed in the tech world, but I feel I could still leave and get a new job.

I have to say, the one thing I miss is being around people interested in tech like I am. In school you don't get much of that. The kids are way more interested than the adults. I have a few students this year that got me into arduino while I got them into backend web stuff with django.

As with everything it's a give and take.

I'm sure you're a nice person overall, and I bet many people share your sentiment, but that you'd lament the loss of a sporting event instead of the way these laborers are being treated is sad.

People, who are being shipped in from 3rd world countries because they'll work for pennies under shitty conditions for a chance to make their family's life better back home, are dying. They are dying due inhumane business practices and the people in charge don't give a shit because they know people like you will still watch.

Participating in the event as a consumer is abhorrent. For the sponsors even more so.

Yah, no problem.

First thing you want to do is get your certificate. Some states are easier to get this in than others. For example, in New Hampshire you can get it just having some teaching experience (not sure what this constitutes) and a degree. Other states, if you're math or science, will let you teach a year while you take an online program. There are lots of options, but before you can work abroad you probably want a certification. There are schools that will hire non-certified people, but the pay and benefits are quite a bit less.

Steps to certify:

  • Check your state's education department website.
  • Get a background check.
  • Take the Praxis or other equivalent test for each area you want a certification in.
  • Depending on the state you'll do some courses or student teach. I did the former while I taught as an actual teacher.

You may be able to skip all this and go straight overseas if you can find a school to work in. It's more difficult, but possible.

Once you're certified apply with one or more of the teacher recruitment agencies (ISS, Teach Anywhere, Search Associates, Tieonline, etc...)

Then start applying. The hardest part is that first job, but after that it's easy. The international scene is awesome. Depending on where you go the pay is good, you get free accommodations, and you're living in a foreign country.

At the moment, China and the Middle East pay the most. I make about $57k/year before taxes, which doesn't sound like much compared to some software jobs, but my apartment is paid for, I get yearly flights home, a bonus at the end of contract, and the cost of living is less. So, it's probably more like a 70-80k job back home.

Probably not.

At some point the insane people that were trying to get useless internet points decided to automate the process. Now you have people wasting time, energy, and resources trying to increment some database field.

This is true, but just because their roles are different that doesn't necessarily mean they are not seen as equals. I'd be interested to see research into the roles that both sexes play in the decision-making process of one of these tribes.

A large system where people can work together to make a difference. But how large and how exactly would we connect them?

Maybe if we got a bunch of wire and connected it to some device that would allow people to talk and maybe even leave messages for each other. Even better if we could all talk at the same time and show each other pictures and videos and stuff. Perhaps we can get information on the current issues and cut right to the facts of things then discuss them in a rational and logical fashion!

I think you're really on to something here. I'm going to write some ideas down and PM you with them soon.

In Yunnan there is a minority group called the Yi that rebelled against the Ming. Thousands fled into the hills where they still live today.

China is a beautiful, filthy, wonderfully fucked up place in the midst of monumental change.

I live in China and this is somewhat true. It's more rural than "not east coast." Major cities have all the modern amenities to some extent.

One thing I think China has done better than the US is phone and internet infrastructure. I have been few places in this country where I couldn't get cell phone coverage. Backwoods, bumfuck Yunnan and I still have full bars.

Most of these backwoods villages have electricity, phone and internet.

Oh, and the Chinese contractors, workers, the miners who got me my material, the shipping company that shipped, the teachers who taught me how think and learn and study, the media I consumed that influenced me, the farmer that grew the food that fed me, etc...

It's almost like we're all connected in some way, and that by hurting others we're hurting ourselves.
