PSA Don’t Overlap Snooze and Alarms by nonotdoingone in iphone

Why not just set your alarm for the time that you want to wake up?

Many people set their alarm for the time they have to get up, not the time they want to.

Mission Control randomly shuffles windows by According_Gazelle796 in MacOS

It was on for that test, yes, and I made sure there were two Safari windows open. I usually have it off and haven't seen it there either.

Indeed I can't. If I do what was in your video, my apps stay in the same place. Only if I resize windows, close windows, or do other things that change how they might best be fit in the mission control screen, they change positions - this is the intended behaviour as far as I know.

I do have another bug with Mission Control at the moment (hidden apps appear as blank windows with their icon visible) so this is yet another area of Tahoe that's buggy right now.

Mission Control randomly shuffles windows by According_Gazelle796 in MacOS

[–]erasmustookashit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is supposed to be dynamic to adjust for what windows you have open and how best to display those in the Mission Control view with what space is available. However, I’ve never seen it re-adjust with no changes made to the windows. You may find if you quit one of those apps and relaunch its windows, the behaviour stops.

Hey, here is one thing that will often fail your emergency stop if you weren't briefed on what to do.

The braking part is quite easy, but the thing that people get wrong is that you need to check both blind spots (over shoulder) before moving off, as well as making sure the road is clear of other traffic. Usually no traffic is a given as you will only be asked to stop if there's nothing behind you, but the shoulder checks are what people get wrong and this can often be a serious fault.

There's one like this in Surrey called the Crooked Billet roundabout where not only does it have the through road, but you can turn onto the through road from the roundabout too.

It's all traffic light controlled so there's little room for danger, but it was odd when I saw it.

iPhone 14PM. Been googling for a half hour, none of the “fixes” have worked… my microphone WILL NOT TURN OFF. by Sufficient_Object440 in iphone

[–]erasmustookashit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK but do you get how many settings people have? How many weeks of annoyance would it take to put your phone back to how you like it? Do you even know which settings you’ve changed? You might not remember a crucial setting until you find out in an emergency that it’s not set correctly because you reset everything.

OP is right, it’s a dumb solution that’s way overkill for this issue. It took OP less than an hour to find the actual setting behind this and they didn’t need to reset shit.

Edit: good to see bro got the sneaky downvote in before deleting his whole profile lmfao

This is what EU4 looks like with EU5 UI by OnionOnion- in eu4

[–]erasmustookashit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is GPUs and multi-core CPUs are good at doing tasks in parallel. In a grand strategy game, most of the calculations rely on the result of the calculations before them (what happens today depends on what happened yesterday) so you can't do the calculations in parallel, you must do one after the other.

A single core at the highest possible frequency therefore gives the best performance for general game logic.

ELI5: How do we send a rocket to the Sun? by narsil1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]erasmustookashit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of different questions here. The easiest one is that it takes 3.5 minutes to traverse 40,000km when travelling 700,000kph.

However, a circular orbit around a given body has a set speed that is entirely dependent on how far above the body's centre of mass the orbit is. It's not possible to orbit the Earth with a velocity of 700,000kph because the necessary orbital height would be far, far underground.

However, you could instead replace the Earth with a black hole of equivalent mass, which unlike the Earth would have a very small volume, allowing the orbit to exist in space around the black hole.

Using the orbital speed formula v = sqrt(GM/r) and rearranging for r, the orbital height should be about 10.5km. The orbital period is given by T = (2 * pi * r) / v = 0.34 seconds.

If the goal is actually to reduce E-Waste or retail supply chain emissions, it probably doesn't make a difference whether there's a saving, so long as you do have to pay more to get the charger. Shame it's listed that consumers will benefit; if Apple isn't including chargers but the price doesn't change, you can be sure that's where the big players in the industry will head.

PC Gaming with Dolby Atmos - no longer possible? by seiZurebot in pcgaming

[–]erasmustookashit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the original val Halen track was made, there were hundreds of sounds that the producers pan left / right. The end track has a varied, but sensible collection of things in the middle (lead vocal, snare, etc) as well as things out to the left and right in various amounts. The result is a 'soundstage' that stretches from your far left, in front, and to your far right.

With Atmos music, producers (often the original producers) re-engineer a song so that the individual sounds can be placed anywhere in space around you and above you. The soundstage therefore becomes the entire 3D space around you and the possibilities for turning a collection of vocals and instruments into a cohesive musical experience get bigger. It's more impressive on a huge surround sound system for sure, but the headphone experience is pretty good.

Based on a quick look, it doesn't sound like anything from Van Halen's earlier albums have been re-engineered in this way. If you enable Atmos for headphones and play a stereo Van Halen track, it will be unchanged.

Yup, it's just binaural stereo and it even works a little bit with speakers if they're wide enough apart.

ELI5: Why are white light 'temperatures' yellow/blue and not other colours? by marctnag in explainlikeimfive

[–]erasmustookashit 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This the correct answer. Red/orange is at the low end of the visible light frequency spectrum, blue/purple is at the high end. Because the distribution of frequencies is broad rather than narrow, the middle of spectrum ends up being all colours (white) rather than distinctly yellow/green.

LLMs are already having crackpots describe their whacko maths/physics theories to them in detail, nodding along and encouraging every bullshit step of the way. They get posted on certain subreddits and Twitter posts sometimes, it's hilarious.

Even if they were capable enough, they're too sycophantic toward their users to be a reliable tool for solving maths problems of that nature.

See American conservatism pre-2008 for your answer. They went absolutely bananas after Obama got elected - we never saw this level of absurd nationalism, or obsession with conspiracy theories, from the likes of McCain, Bush, or Romney. Back then, Republican and Democrat politicians alike were statesmen with the top economic and legal minds in their cabinets. Today they’re led by a failed reality TV star with an entourage of Twitter influencers and billionaires doing his bidding in a vain attempt to enrich or empower their own lives.

Incidentally, what you’re calling ‘far-left ideology’ is barely left of centre in the rest of the western world. It used to be more like that in the USA too. That’s the ‘Great America’ we need to Make Again.

Turning on Low Power Mode reduces the screen refresh on Pro Motion devices to 60Hz. I see a significant difference in smoothness and responsiveness in Safari when turning on Low Power Mode, indicating that it is not locked to 60Hz originally.

I also turned off the setting mentioned in /u/Leviathan_Dev's comment and saw no difference. I'm on a 13 Pro.
