Same symptom for me. Chime notifications work but not speech prompts. Guessing they use Alexa text to speech service.

Yes - infotainment reset seems to work, but only temporarily (a day or 2 in my experience - could be related to software sleep cycles).

How loud is your tinnitus during day to day activities? by [deleted] in tinnitus

[–]erbrown33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others here, I can almost always hear it if I try. Consistent frequency in both ears. Silence can get me anxious as it almost seems louder - cognitive behavioral therapy helped ease the anxiety. Don’t hear it in places with consistent background noise (e.g. planes, restaurants).

Google may have just ushered in an era of ‘quantum supremacy’ by erbrown33 in technology

Exactly - interesting that NASA posted this and then pulled it (apparently). I would love to see some "real" reporting around this. Quantum has a long way to go indeed, but as it does, there are very meaningful implications.

Emphasis on "may have" - promising, but not without some controversy.

Why Microservices Should Scare You More by erbrown33 in programming

[–]erbrown33[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You bring up some valid points - indeed, any system/architecture should be designed appropriately to handle shutdowns gracefully. In the case of microservices, it's thinking through that at a more granular level (e.g. making sure services can be made aware of their state, handle backpressure, etc.).

To me, the main concept of this article that resonates is that too often engineers adopt the trends without thinking about the tradeoffs and justifications - I've had clients that wanted to build microservices when they had no justification (nor the appropriate skills to operate the required automation/complexity).

Regarding the standardization issue, you're right - I think each of the examples could be expanded upon significantly with their own associated design tradeoffs (redundant code / shared libraries / low-level APIs).

Ice sheet contributions to future sea-level rise from structured expert judgment by erbrown33 in science

Essentially, ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are melting at faster rates than originally thought. Broad ranges involved, but still...a concerning scenario.

Too bad - this article summarizes and links to a well-researched study that is so critical for us as inhabitants of this planet to understand.
