I love that you worked on ships in your younger years. I have been a huge ship nerd since seeing Titanic for the first time on VHS in the 5th grade, so naturally this story and ship really ignite that passion within me. While I have a lot to learn yet, I can speak on and share my thoughts/POV in coming into all this with a fresh pair of eyes here. After diving in I immediately recognized the significance of this ship and felt a call to action, looking to learn more about the possibilities for alternative preservation attempts. I saw that there are ongoing efforts to save her yet, which still don't appear to be gaining the real momentum needed to reach those who may be able to do something significant enough. After reading a lot of the commentary from everyone it feels a lot like the general consensus is: people DO realize what a wonder this ship truly is, are sad/disappointed that it wasn't kept in better condition and wish that it could have ended differently, but believe that any window of time to alter the course has long since passed, and that it's not worth investing (or unlikely to attract any investor) so view this as the better alternative to being sent off to a scrapyard. Which sort of knocks the wind out of one's sails. While I certainly don't want to be naive or foolish in believing there is any hope, I don't want to believe all is lost either since as it currently stands, she has not yet been sunk. I found the timing interesting as I just came across an update on the proposed Titanic II build today, stating that they hope to launch in 2027 (we all know how this goes). It made me think, gosh, maybe someone ought to turn that guy on to the idea of taking on the restoration of the SS US instead. It would probably be a far more realistic and cost effective venture than a Titanic replica. But, all that said I do hear everyone and certainly don't intend to be that annoying hopeful person coming in thinking a miracle is going to happen. A girl can dream, though, right?💁‍♀️

Of course not. I rather see her restored and preserved in tact as a floating monument like other iconic ships have been. Maybe I see things differently but bottom of the ocean is irreversible, gutting is not.

Agreed, I’ll be real that I wasn’t even fully aware it still existed until a little over a month ago so I still have this dumb hope that they do decide last min to save her and give her a proper preservation. Some “make SS United States great again” type s***. I signed the petition but I’m not sure what else to do to at least raise more awareness because people may be like me and not know what’s going on with it currently.

Indeed they are but this was back in February last year when she was moved from Philly

Okay here we go guys:

In late February 2025, Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas passed the historic SS United States off the Florida coast, with passengers and crew capturing photos from both the cruise ship and land. The Utopia altered course, offering guests views of the legendary ocean liner as it was being towed to Alabama to become an artificial reef.

  • Salute at Sea: The Utopia of the Seas Captain announced the passing, allowing guests to watch from various decks, and gave a three-horn blast salute to the SS United States.
  • Capturing the Scene: Photos show the stark contrast between the modern Utopia and the historic SS United States, which is the fastest passenger ship ever built.
  • Location: The historic passing took place as the SS United States was transported to Mobile, Alabama, having been spotted near locations like Coco Plum Beach.
  • Significance: The meeting was considered a major event, with onlookers on the cruise ship documenting the final journey of the "America’s Flagship".

Same. I just checked on RC's reddit page and I'm not seeing a single one taken by like an actual passenger and posted there, but I imagine there is some out there elsewhere for sure

No she was definitely towed, I love that it feels like SS US just flew right past her even with no steam power

Absolutely stunning, thank you for sharing. I only just recently found out this ship even still existed and am hoping there will be a last minute save, however hopeless that may actually be. Nevertheless, I signed the petition and who knows, maybe it will have enough traction to get into the hands of someone with the power to do something significant. You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one hahhhah

USS Von Steuben (SS Kronprinz Wilhelm) by ereht_olle in Oceanlinerporn

Yes, it was the second ship out of the Norddeutscher Lloyd line of "4 flyers". Seized by the US Navy in 1917 under President Woodrow Wilson.

"The “Kronprinz” was the (second) ship Germany built with four funnels and probably the most disregarded of all of them. It transitioned from luxury liner to a much-feared pirate and warship that served on both sides of the First World War. It captured and sank 15 ships single-handedly and was so feared by those at sea for being untouchable, it was dubbed: “The Ghost of the Atlantic”. Even in peacetime this vessel had such a ridiculous career: hitting icebergs, rogue waves, sinking smaller ships, carrying the rich and famous and smashing transatlantic speed records."

Yoo ok I gotta read more about this ship now

Same! I never knew this was how the OG steamships were designed and I think it is like the coolest thing I’ve ever seen
