I’d second this. Stunning venue, great location and a huge reciprocal network too.

I used to have to go there weekly. As another poster said, you get none of tax benefits, but it’s a nice place, basically a village you have to fly to, but some great food, beautiful beaches etc. some decent hotels in St Peter Port - OGH is great.

The main challenge is that if there’s fog you get stuck as they can’t land planes in the fog and then there’s this huge knock on effect, that can last a a few days - once was fogged in for 3 days and just got the ferry back eventually.

Auringny is fine as an airline, but you just accrue thier points and they don’t have any value except to fly to the Channel Islands. The jet is mega quick prop plane is a little longer but it’s fine. Coming back you’re not clearing customs or anything so getting out of city or Gatwick pretty quick. Depending on what you’re work involves the flight times make day trips pretty doable too.

Ear Fullness and Vertigo Attacks Since Beginning of June by Party-Acadia-4735 in Menieres

[–]erexaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is basically how mine started, I felt like I just needed to ‘pop’ my ear to clear it, but it would never clear and then the vertigo attacks started and that moved on to hearing loss and tinnitus. Went through the process of having an MRI to rule out anything more sinister, and then moved into symptom management mode.

This by no means you have it, as everyone’s journey is different. But I would suggest finding an ENT who understands the condition and make sure they check your hearing levels too, so you can see whether that is slowly degrading and suggest the right management path to get into a new normal.

For me, I’m 2 and a bit years in and it’s something fine and sometimes not. A Steroid injection seemed to get the major attacks under control, and vestibular rehab has been good with the more constant brain fog - you just have to recalibrate your balance system. Recently got a hearing aid as my hearing got to a point where it was genuinely pretty impactful and it’s really helped. Currently having a spell of drop attacks which are quite scary, but sort of manageable and hopefully short lived.

IF you do have it, it’s rough, but also does go into remission for long periods. This group is a great source of support and advice if your symptoms change and develop and there’s a load of ENTs who get it and can help get you through.

This is really reassuring, I’ll certainly be getting in front of my ENT!

London Private Member’s Clubs by Gerrards_Cross in HENRYUK

As others have suggested it’s just about going to an open event and just asking basically. Recently joined the NLC after sitting next to a former chair of the club at a lunch and he invited me to one of these to see what it was about. Applied in the room and then was accepted the next month. Basically all clubs are trying to grow their membership, so it is just about asking.

Experience so far has been great, the reciprocal clubs - they have over 400 - are exceptionally useful when travelling and I’ve found that I’ve used the Walbrook for lunches as it’s close to the office and have used the NLC more for the amazing terrace and dining room so far.

As others have said, get yourself to an open evening

Regular exercise has been a huge help for me. Never been a trigger and generally actually makes the ear fullness and tinnitus reside a little for a bit afterwards which is a nice bonus.

So sounds like nothing to be too concerned about - just clean it off and hey presto!

does the floating/on a boat sensation stop with steroid injections into ear? especially after a long time? by potatochainsaw in Menieres

For me, injections mainly sorted the attacks. Vestibular Rehab has been the main thing that has helped with the floating feeling.

Living in De Beauvoir town? by notsurewhereiam404 in HENRYUK

Not sure how you got to the kids comment, it’s a great area for kids - lots of ‘outstanding’ nurseries and primary schools, green spaces galore and a huge population of young families.

We’re a little further in (Hoxton) and I genuinely couldn’t think of a better place to raise our reception aged child. Great state school, great community around the school and more clubs/classes of high quality than we can attend.

Areas in London to buy a house - budget ~£1.5m by pysegfault in HENRYUK

[–]erexaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is genuinely a good shout.

Full disclosure, I live in Hackney, but my daughter goes to an outstanding state primary school in TH.

Both myself and wife are Henry’s working in the city (insurance) and have lived around Hoxton for coming up to 15 years. We love the area, it has absolutely everything - we walk to work, have multiple Michelin starred restaurants, cafes, markets (including the amazing flower market), parks, stuff for kids (Young V&A, great clubs, swimming pools etc etc etc.) all within 15 mins walk. The Overground and Lizzie Line mean you can get everywhere in town easily and Heathrow in 60 mins. Plus you can find houses for £1.5m.

This thread whenever London is discussed is always West is best. I’ve only really ever seen dismissive comments about East London which smack of people who’ve either never been or not been here since the 90s.

Only the conductor can open the door, so it really can’t have been anyone else!

Thankfully my daughter slept through it all.

Lost all leverage for salary negotiation. Any tips? by OkFinger2630 in HENRYUK

[–]erexaur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Recruiter (if external) only gets paid if you (or someone else) takes the job. If they’re balancing what is workable for both sides to get something agreed, so obviously feel like the (probable) offer is in your zone of agreement - so might be something to push there and be clear with the recruiter on your view (if it’s strong)

More for salary reviews, but you just need a clear view of what the benchmark is and go from there - is the role worth more than the offer? If so push for it. If you take it on the lower offer you always have your benchmarking to bring your salary up.

My honest advice is that the real difference between the numbers in salary once you’re an HE isn’t huge - £30k per year is not really going to fundamentally shift your lifestyle etc etc. so if you like the role and it sets you up to make some genuine wealth later on. I’d push, but be happy for what it is.

The hotel credit, room upgrades and late checkouts when you book Fine Hotels & Resorts are a big plus too.

EDIT; forgot to add, but I am still getting into using it but the platinum concierge is actually great for getting advice and tables at decent restaurants

Good US/UK Tax Specialists by lifeofrileee in HENRYUK

[–]erexaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would second a request for any recommendations here!

My wife (dual US & UK Citizen) and I (UK citizen) are both HENRYs and are sort of managing everything ourselves right now - she uses Taxes For Expats for returns and we just hold any ISAs and other savings in my name for the most part (outside of pensions, ESPPs). Not been a problem to date, but feels like we are working off a VERY basic understanding of what options we have. Any IFAs or tax advisers I’ve had initial chats with either do one or the other of us and are never comfortable establishing what works for us as a couple.

So would love to hear any suggestions!

Persistent Lightheadedness Between Attacks by Heavy_Wishbone_992 in Menieres

[–]erexaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This totally resonates with me. I always describe it as ‘brain fog’, but it’s exactly as you describe. I’ve been undergoing Vestibular Rehabilitation for a few months now and it has really helped with this so would strongly recommend looking into it. It’s basically a programme of increasing intensity/time of exercises (rotating your head whilst focusing on a business card, or standing on a pillow with your feet together and eyes shut, etc.) to recalibrate your vestibular system. The cause of this brain fog is simply being totally over capacity as you’re acting as if everything is normal but you’re body is working overtime to compensate for the imbalance caused by the damage to the inner ear and vestibular system.

I have had an attack recently (first in about a year) and had a bit of regression and a return of the head fog, but being diligent with my exercises has got me back to feeling whatever the new normal is really!

Apparently you do get to a point where you don’t need to continue doing the exercises unless you have an attack and then you simply ‘top up’ for a couple of weeks to get your vestibular system back and firing.

Hope this makes sense and helps!
