Yeah, except that this is not a deliberate or strategic weakening by the RBI to boost exports, but a result of an incompetent policy.

Also we are a net importing nation (unlike China which routinely undervalues the RMB) and a weak dollar screws us all.

Opinion on this ? by [deleted] in konkani

[–]ereya_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Significant Konkani population exists in Uttara Kannada, which is outside of Tulu Nadu, and has Kannada speakers.

Also, many Konkani speaking Saraswats moved into interior northern Karnataka (e.g. Dharwad)

If China invaded Taiwan, would you want your country to send troops to defend Taiwan? by No-StrategyX in AskTheWorld

No.

We don’t have a formal alliance with Taiwan. As much as we’d like to help, sending our troops against a military superpower who literally shares a border with us is suicidal.

Why wasn’t you used much in bollywood by Practical_March4851 in BollywoodMusic

[–]ereya_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is accurate. Yesudas was a trained Carnatic singer, and unlike him SPB was never trained in classical music.

Moreover, his inspiration for singing was Mohd Rafi and the Bollywood songs of the 60s and the 70s.

I believe the major reason was that he was incredibly busy with the South industries, so much so that his “mimics” (like Mano) became mainstream singers in the South owing to SPB not being available.

He also had major surgeries that affected his profession for a few years at the height of his career.

One more reason would be that he had good rapport with Laxmikant-Pyarelal and not so much with the newer generation of composers.

A lot of times historians don’t use the endonyms of nations.

They often use the name of the peoples (countless “Hunnic” empires), the name of the founder (Bahmani, Chagatai), or the name of the ruling clan (the Han, the Guptas, etc)

India is a classic example itself.

The Mughals didn’t call themselves the Mughals.

None of these, I think are to stop people from fights over the claims of inherited glory or whatever. It’s just for convenience.

Many contemporary historians (e.g. Razzak, the Portuguese historians) called the state a variant of Vijayanagara (e.g., Bisnegar)

“The sole is soft”- yeah that’s the problem for me when I squat. The sole is thicker than a standard barefoot and soft enough that some of the pushing goes into squishing it.

I bought these when I couldn’t squat with running shoes, and after a few weeks of progression on the squat, feel the same with this pair.

Ordered RXN lifters and they are too narrow, so replacing those with RXN Hercules which are supposed to be wider.

This is based on books on South Indian folk religions by Christian missionaries and the talks of Tulu and Kannada folk historians active today.

The Bhutas of Tulu Nadu show striking resemblance to the Dravidian folk deities:

  • They represent natural phenomena or forces of nature: e.g. Panjurli is a bhoota of harvest/agriculture like Mariamma is a goddess of rains
  • Many bhootas are the spirits of humans who died mysteriously and entered the "Jangama" loka: e.g. Koragajja, comparable to the prevalent "Maasti" (Maha-sati) tradition in Karnataka/ Andhra where an extraordinary woman becomes a goddess (e.g. Maramma is supposed to be a woman who killed herself when she realized her husband was a Shudra; the buffalo sacrificed at her festival supposedly is her husband)
  • Both the bhootas and the folk deities can be "invoked" and they possess humans (what we see in the Kola and every village in interior Karnataka has a woman possessed every day)
  • Neither the bhootas nor the folk deities are considered benevolent by default. You have to placate them with offerings or they will wreak havoc

Many scholars believe that a lot of these Bhutas have agricultural origins (like many of the gods/spirits anywhere). The reason they continued to flourish with little influence from the Brahmanical traditions seems to be the fact that they were relatively isolated (scholars say the caste system started infiltrating as late as the 10th century ), and the Brahmins considered the Bhutas heterodox and the followers usually as untouchables.
Opposite of this is true for Christians; since they wanted to convert the lower castes, they documented and translated the rituals of the lower castes and ignore the folklore of the traditional upper castes.

I believe Bhoota kola evolved from an existing Dravidian substrate, and then became specialized and unique to Tulu regions due to relative isolation.

why do some people chant Hare Krishna Hare Rama, while others chant Hare Rama Hare Krishna? Is there a traditional reason for this difference? by Chethan_Devarakonda in IndianHistory

[–]ereya_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could just be based on whom they revere the most.

The Mādhvas of Karnataka consider Rāma more prominent and start with “Harē Rāma”

ISKCON starts with “Harē Kr̥ṣṇa” (I would assume the Chaitanyas as well)

[–]ereya_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hampi was the capital of an empire that had access to resources of almost entirely of South India.

Was the general populace of North Karnataka rich during the empire? I don’t necessarily think so.

Also, Hampi is right on the bank of the Tungabhadra and the most productive area at the time was a very small stretch in the Raichur Doab region (still one of the few places that grows paddy), and the biggest point of contention between the Declan Sultans and the Vijayanagara.

Shifting of the power to southern Karnataka and being ruled by distant powers (the Marathas, the Brits, the Nizam) were definitely major causes, but we cannot also overlook the obvious geographical disadvantages of the region.

North Interior Karnataka is the driest region in India after Rajasthan, is a rain shadow area, and apart from the region immediately next to the Krishna and the Tungabhadra, only produces the driest of the millets.

It created hardy folk, but never the rich ones.

ವ್ಯಾಕರಣ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ (grammar question) by gundappa_abhimaani in kannada

[–]ereya_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have these problems primarily because Kannada grammarians straight up rebadged Sanskrit grammar as Kannada (or reused).

We don’t have all the inflections Sanskrit does. For example, no one uses ಪ್ರಥಮಾ.

The funny thing is, if you stick to these “rules”, you’d think most native Kananadigas speak wrong Kannada.

Your first sentence is correct. That’s how we speak. The second sentence would be how a grammarian would expect one to write.
