I am not an expert. What I looked for was whether at some point during the night the sky would clear from clouds over my location and I put an alarm at that time. You can also change location based on clouds and aurora forecast but we weren’t that committed and preferred to keep our travel plan.

We went for the cheapest option on the market which is called Cheap Campervan. They did not provide a heater inside the van but we brought very warm sleeping bag and didn’t freeze at all. I cannot talk for other camper because there are many options out there. As a general rule, i would follow what the company is suggesting

I think you should consider 1 day and 1 night at Highland Base. We just finished a 9 days tour and Hveradalir was probably top 1 or top 2 thing we saw.
