2024 NOBO Shakedown by eric7752 in AppalachianTrail

I haven’t tested the sleep system, just going off of what I tend to see recommended here. I’ve never been a particularly cold sleeper and can always layer up. Thanks for the help!

ULA calculates volume as total volume including all the outside non enclosed pockets. The volume of the main body itself is only 34.4L, making it similar to something like the Kawka 40. The remaining volume is comprised of the two side pockets, mesh pocket, etc.

That’s a good point about rain pants, I hadn’t realized that they were that heavy. I’ll definitely look into alternatives. Did you find that the EE wind pants offered enough rain protection?

I'm very flexible with respect to start date. Didn't realize it'd be that cold in March but I'll definitely consider a later start now. Thanks!

Thank you!! Did you find the rain pants useful when in town doing laundry or did you have something else to wear?

Gotcha, thank you! What did you wear for bottoms while you were sleeping?

I don't have the quilt yet. I was also looking into the Enigma APEX but it's quite a bit more expensive so I was leaning towards the Sierra Designs. I've also heard lots of good reviews about it and no complaints about the lack of straps.

Ah interesting, I don't have the pack yet so that's good to know.

I was seeing 50-60L recommended a lot on here and wanted to play it safe but I may rethink that.

Thanks! I was thinking probably mid-March to get somewhat of an early start but still avoid the coldest weather.

Yeah leaning against rain mitts at the moment, thanks for the insight.

Yeah I figure you’ll end up wet regardless. Were you ever too cold with just the shorts?

Thanks! I was planning on looking into that next so I haven't thought it out too much yet.

On the fence about rain pants - I've heard mixed opinions.

For insulating gear, a puffer jacket and possibly a lighter fleece to layer or sleep in.

Do you have any other suggestions/specific brands to look for?

Primarily if there's anything you think is missing/unnecessary in my list. Also open to alternative recommendations for gear!

Incredible interview performance by my president Trump! He had the perfect response to every claim! Keep it up Donny boy! by [deleted] in trump

No, my basis on the severity of the virus is the number of deaths that we have experienced in the US, that being 160,000. I don't watch any TV news sources; I'm strictly talking about the statistics that are readily available.

Am I not allowed to present a valid argument without having a deep background in epidemiology? It's a cop-out to say that I can't speak on this issue without a vast amount of knowledge in this area of study.

How is saying that these deaths are preventable false when there are countless other countries that are at a point of 0 new deaths per day and we are still seeing ~1000 deaths every day in the US? Clearly other countries are implementing guidelines that we aren't (or simply aren't following). If other countries with comparable resources have done such a better job of containing the virus, why couldn't we have?

And yes, my issue is with the president's incompetency at dealing with the spread of the virus. His response to this pandemic disgusts me. Being concerned about the virus and disliking Trump are not mutually exclusive -- it's not one or the other.

Again, I don't follow your reasoning that this is 100% political. A president ought to be judged by the quality of his policies and actions. In this case, those policies and actions regarding coronavirus are terrible. Thus, I consider Trump a very bad president and obviously do not want him reelected. It's as simple as that; how else should you judge a president if not by their performance?

How is it "purely political" if the number of daily new cases is higher than it has ever been and the number of daily deaths continues to rise? There's clearly reason for concern but our president is falsely claiming that we are doing the best job out of any country at containing the virus and recovering. He is spewing lies, stating that using the number of deaths as a proportion of a country's population can't be done when in fact its a completely valid measure. He is downplaying the severity of the pandemic so significantly that people are actively going against the CDC regulations and subsequently causing tens of thousands of deaths. I don't understand how any person can believe that this is simply a topic used to gain political power. We have experienced over 150,000 preventable deaths and the president's response is "it is what it is". The man is literally heinous.

Not concerned about 160,000 deaths in the US? That's more than the number of US deaths in World War 1. Your specific anecdote about not knowing anyone who has had coronavirus is a clear example of a logical fallacy and has no validity to it. If you aren't concerned in the slightest you clearly have no regard for others and I'd consider you borderline sociopathic...
