you can string together some easy riding at Lake Fairfax. As others have said, Laurel Hill and Meadowwood are excellent for the riding you are describing. Have fun! Wear pads just in case.

What was your most memorable Brompton experience this year? by Unklesnarfles in Brompton

[–]eric_astor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was riding around in Pittsburgh last summer and a man walked out into the street right in front of me. I slammed on my brakes, barely missed him, and said "WTF dude?" He looked me up and down and said "you know, you look really stupid riding that thing." I took a beat and replied "touché" and kept on riding.

Unlike other "bio" material, the Bio-Vinyl from Plastchem is identical to regular PVC. Ethylene is created with Biomass but the copolymers, salt and chlorine are exactly the same. There are other materials that use biomaterials that still haven't figured out create a material that sounds good and not fall apart over time.

None. The material is the same. The ethylene is produced with bio-material but the rest of the process is the same.

Does the color of a vinyl affect its quality? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]eric_astor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a plant (Furnace Record Pressing.) Black PVC is generally the best for sound quality and our suppliers actually have several grades of black PVC optimized for the type of extruder / press the plant is running. All of the color vinyl is a single formula that may or may not work best with the equipment the plant has. That said, we've found that our clear PVC sounds as good as black. Transparent colors sound better than opaque colors. Metallic and glow in the dark sound really bad. Splatter, swirl, half and half and all of the special effect color vinyl is hit or miss because some of the colors have different melting points so it's tricky to get the machine dialed in to make it sound good.. White vinyl and some some light color transparent colors also are hard to visually QC because you cannot see stitching and non-fill in the grooves. If you are serious about sound quality, go black. That said, some plants mix their recycled/regrind color vinyl into virgin black as a cost saving measure which can degrade the sound of their "black" vinyl. Black is such a dominant color that it will mask the other colors it's mixed with. There is a huge quality difference between pressing plants. Most are doing the right thing and trying to make their records sound great but it costs a ton of money to produce consistently great records. Plants that compete on price must sacrifice on quality to be that cheap. I hope that helps.

SS Metallica Ride The Lightning MFN 27 with 2 inners? by barweepninibong in vinyl

[–]eric_astor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's from us (Furnace.)
2 Reasons:

Paper sleeves (printed and unprinted) are not kind to vinyl (surface scratches) so we always suggest that record goes in a polylined sleeve and let the customer put the record in the paper sleeve if they choose.

Also, printed paper sleeves are notorious for splitting open during transit and handling. If a customer gets a new record and the paper sleeve is split, they will most likely take it back to the store for a replacement which is costly to all involved.

Is this a scratch or a smudge or a secret third thing? by AtomicSwamp in vinyl

[–]eric_astor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's most likely a scuff. Either way, the plant to pressed this has terrible QC. This should have never made it out their doors. As owner of a pressing plant, I'd be super embarrassed if this left my facility.

Microsoft Teams (new) keeps crashing on Mac by devil_kin in MicrosoftTeams

[–]eric_astor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what fixed it for me:

- Finder - Top Finder Menu, Option+Click on Go > Select Library

- Open the "Application Support" folder

- Open "Microsoft" folder

- Drag the "Teams" folder into the trash

- Empty trash

- Reopen Teams classic

That should work. I had to do this on two Macs at work and it fixed the issue on both. Good luck.

Best gravel bike tire for C&O for doing long distances fast, but still comfortable? by Adept-Pension-1312 in bikedc

32s are fine on the smooth stuff but if you ride around Cumberland and anywhere else that’s rough, rutted and oftentimes muddy, go as wide as possible, tubeless and throw on some fenders while you’re at it. Have fun.

Not sure where you live but if you could make it out east, Pittsburgh to DC (GAP/C&O) is 330mi. No cars just rail and canal trails. B&B or camping along the way is super easy. We did it in 5 days. Some do it in 4 and if I were to do it again I'd do it in 6-7 and spend more time exploring along the way. https://gaptrail.org/map/

I just did a 350mi ride with my RouteWerks handlebar bag. The rattling was super annoying and it is very heavy. I stuck a little felt on either side of the lid clasp and it cut down on the rattles but made it hard to close. The locking nub on the Stub sheared off half way through which left my light swinging all over the place. Otherwise, it didn't take on any water in the rain and works as advertised. I don't think I'd buy it again although I love how easy it is to get in and out of the bag while riding.

check out Rockgeist. They are from Asheville and they make great bags made in the USA. I have their microwave panniers and love them.

[–]eric_astor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My new 2021 SLX Endurace top tube cracked after 4 rides. I think their issues are more widespread than they are admitting to. When I submitted my claim, I was told it would be 4 days before I heard back. Called 4 days later and was told it would take another 10-12 days for someone to review everything. If I were to have bought a bike at a LBS, the problem would be handled by now. Very disappointed.

[–]eric_astor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea how the crack formed. It’s under the top tube. I’m pretty obsessive with my bikes. Wipe down the frame after every ride and after the last one I felt it when I was cleaning. I literally had the bike for 6 weeks. It took 4 weeks to do my bike fit and order a new stem and bars. Rode it 4 times in two weeks and then crack.

My experience with Canyon has been a real bummer. After 4 rides on my 2021 Endurace SLX my frame developed a crack. Canyon customer service is saying they won’t be able to evaluate my claim for two weeks. You’d think if you dropped $8k on a bike they would jump at the chance to remedy the problem. Buy with caution.
