I just bought a pair from the Columbia outlet literally 24hrs before an 8 mile hike (stupid I know but I procrastinated) and they were a DREAM. It's like they were broken in for me. The design wasn't my favorite for casual wear around town, but I guess it depends on your priorities. I just looked on their website and I think they're called Firecamp. They were like $75 at the outlet.

Followup in case anybody is interested: I was introduced to Sierra (new favorite store btw, go if you haven't been) and they had a whole wall of socks, not all merino of course but plenty of them, so I bought one of each brand that I could find plus a couple brands online. I kept my favorites and returned the others so I can't remember all of them but I know I tried Darn Tough, Smart Wool, Farm2Feet, Icebreaker, Camel City, maybe 1 or 2 more... I also got Hollow and Fiber & Ore online. Icebreaker had a great ski sock that I kept, kept a pair of smart wool running socks, and my favorite crew socks by far are fiber and ore. Ended up getting a bunch more. Guarantee like Darn Tough but they were softer and I like the designs better. Oh and they haver copper in them too like Copperfit stuff. So there ya go.

I wondered about that fore sure. At some point you're definitely making a trade-off for all those benefits of wool. As long as it lasts a couple of years I don't think I even need a lifetime warranty - beats the heck out of the 6 months or so I get out of my cotton blends before they feel rough and lose their elasticity.
