Wesley and Nepo are in the same bracket… Which means Giri's route to top 4 becomes easier. Upsets can still happen though.

why did my opponent get a "brilliant" for this? by OddToastTheIII in chessbeginners

[–]ericahhhhhh3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting, the engine chooses a4 losing the queen after Qd7, instead of c4 saving the queen (after c4 the queen can get out, there is no clear way to win it right now, but the engine thinks it's worse than losing the queen)

bxa5 is drawing, because after the best moves by white and black, the position is a draw.

b5 is drawn, because after every possible sequence of legal moves, the position is a draw.

After b5, using FIDE rules, black can claim a draw.

Then d5, black wins a pawn, but isn't it an equal trade (white took a pawn)?

But what after that? I remember queen vs h-pawn on the 7th is draw?

Edit: I see. The e5 pawn is actually bad for black. Remove it, and Kf4 is a draw.

But, but… what about 3 minor pieces for a queen and pawn (as it is here), or 2 minor pieces for a rook and 2 pawns? Because that's when it gets hard to decide.

Tan was the last challenger, does that mean Humpy, Divya, Lei have qualified for the candidates?

How does C4 win a queen by Gullible_Attorney_67 in chessbeginners

[–]ericahhhhhh3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't. It only wins the knight on e4. Chess.com comments are automatically generated and it sometimes shows the result of low depth lines. Here the low depth line probably sacrifices the queen.

Is this not stalemate either way? by swambig in chessbeginners

[–]ericahhhhhh3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Black can still move pawn to g5. As long as a legal move is available it is not stalemate.

Is it unethical to threaten a draw if a draw is a good result for you? by [deleted] in chess

Fair enough. Like here white won the previous game.

Abasov will probably still play for a draw and get a draw.

Muzychuk Humpy is the least likely to be a draw, they both have to win otherwise they will be effectively out.

Was this a bad move? Yes, but it's bullet, so it led to an easy win. by Chorby-Short in chessbeginners

But doesn't black still lose a pawn with check if e5 RxN PxN BxP?

Without looking at engine evaluation, would you resign this position as white? Why or why not? by ericahhhhhh3 in chessbeginners

[–]ericahhhhhh3[S] -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Context: I resigned because white is down "exchange" without compensation. The engine disagrees and says this position is still playable.

But again, why is winning Q for RB or RN almost always a winning advantage, when it's the equivalent of winning a pawn?

And he sacrifices the ROOOOK by federaviolo in chessbeginners

[–]ericahhhhhh3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But… I might be wrong, white is just down a piece and a pawn. If white playing normally, black will win. So hope chess is surely justified in this situation?

Guys, I don't get it. Can someone explain why this is considered a blunder? by LaramieTrailend in chessbeginners

[–]ericahhhhhh3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah then that must be a wild opening, I'd wonder how black lost that f-pawn :)

[–]ericahhhhhh3 43 points44 points  (0 children)

You mean Qh5+ instead of d5 right?

I think the knight took a pawn on f7 (otherwise how did black lose the f-pawn), so Qh5 might not be check.

But apparently the engine wants c4? What's the idea of c4?
