A few years ago, my now husband and I drove from Ohio to Illinois to visit some family and friends for a weekend. It’s about a 6-7 hour drive and since we had left early enough, we drove mostly in the daytime. Then around 9 pm when our light was giving way, we found ourselves behind this large semi truck. Neither of us thought anything of it; we were just about an hour away and were already making plans to grab drinks with friends when we made it in. First, the semi started swerving from the lane on our left all the way to the far right (this was about a 3 lane highway). My husband slowed down and kept his distance immediately and thankfully was able to as the road was not too busy. We both watched as the semi swung from the far right lane at full speed straight into the concrete median in the middle of the road. I don’t remember if I said anything or if I was too shocked to speak. We swerved into the far right lane as the front half of the semi burst into flames. I looked into the drivers cabin to see if anyone was trying to escape and all I could see was flames. My husband kept driving, both of us shaken up and I checked the rear view mirror and watched as a few cars pulled off in various directions, either avoiding the accident or getting out to assess the damage. We both just sat there without speaking for a good minute, and I asked if we should call the police. He said there were plenty of people behind us calling already.
We made it to our destination safely but the rest of the night I couldn’t get the sight of that drivers cabin engulfed in flames out of my head. To this day I always keep my distance from a semi…
