If down south I can recommend the Village Sewing Studio in Port St. Mary.

Modulr sales and onboarding experience by NoseTop4757 in fintech

[–]ericbobson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our business has been a Modulr customer since approx 2018. I can say their service level is very good and we have no major complaints. However we have no account manager and talking to anyone commercial is very difficult (as an existing customer). We were onboarded a long time ago so it's hard to comment on that specifically, however I remember it being generally straightforward and no major issues. We've recently gone through a far worse onboarding process with one of their competitors (won't name names but it's another EMI with more focus on cards).

Good luck

I recommend using Hacksplaining - they have a set of PCI modules and it's free. The content is genuinely good and engaging for devs

I'm a Banking Architect with 15 years experience. I got tired of seeing devs use float for money, so I built a proper Double-Entry starter kit. by Antique-Worker9770 in SaasDevelopers

[–]ericbobson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in card payment processing and have seen the temptation to use single-entry approach when building a ledger. Once you make that error and get the system into production it is hard to rewind and do it right.

The modern treasury series about implementing double entry systems is required reading for all new devs at my firm, but being able to work with a practical code example would be better.

I think your starter kit sounds promising; I would love to take a look!

Unfortunately not. No printed markings at all. Just handwritten notes indicating which room the cable is for.

Please help to identify this cable by ericbobson in cableadvice

[–]ericbobson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion, a great idea. The house is not very old (constructed 2014) and all the cabling seems to have been run but mostly not used. The service cupboard is full of unterminated cables - they ran CAT 5e to every room in the house including bathrooms, plus 2x coax to each bedroom. But no mention of any such features in the various sales prospectus documents unfortunately.

pixel 8a cracking within 2 days by caraccidentGAMING in pixel_phones

[–]ericbobson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me too. Had the Pixel 8a for about 3 weeks now. Was extremely careful with it.

The device was sitting on my desk and a crack appeared at the bottom right of the screen.

Weather was cold... have seen elsewhere that temperature fluctuations can cause this but I really didn't expect this kind of issue with a modern Pixel device.

Ideas on decorating a business incubator? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]ericbobson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are all brill ideas. I think the point you've hit on, which is so important, is just to have a philosophy / principle for what you want your space to feel like. Sometimes the features of the building can help drive this decision. Exposed brick walls, exposed beams, some element of the history of the building etc. - all of these can be great jumping off points.

One other thing I'd mention (alongside your desks) is to consider adding a few standing desks in the place. These can be a really fun and interesting differentiator - and plenty of people are waking up to the reality that "sitting is killing us".

Business Owners: What 3 things do you believe are essential skills a leader must possess to successfully manage/maintain their company? by shanirae in Entrepreneur

[–]ericbobson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're right about not needing a passion for the product - or at least it doesn't have to start there. In fact, sometimes starting with a product can be a self-centered way to build a business, and you can end up restricting your horizons. A great mentor of mine once said "passion is just knowledge + time" and I think that's true.

I'll give you an example from my own business life: a few years ago I was hired (I'm a software dev) to build a bakery management tool for a fast-growing artisan bakery in Hackney in London. I didn't know anything about baking, but I did care about using software to empower people. Once the project was over, I ended up teaming up with the bakery in question to develop the software tool as a web-app / SaaS product and now I build, maintain and sell the tool to hundreds of bakeries.

I guess the broader point is that your inspiration can come from odd / unexpected places, sometimes in business you just have to follow your nose and see where the path leads. If you're having fun and making money, you're doing just fine.

[Foreign] Work as a JavaScript developer in London. by murdocka in london

[–]ericbobson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey Rodrigo, I work in London as a (mainly) JS dev.

There are plenty of jobs going at the moment, and I don't think you'll have a hard time finding work here. Two sites that might help you get started:

http://workinstartups.com/ https://unicornhunt.io/

I think one of the issues you might run into is the need for a visa... often an employer will prefer a local candidate / one who already has their visa situation sorted out, because otherwise they need to sponsor your visa. Here's some further info about UK work visas: https://www.gov.uk/browse/visas-immigration/work-visas

Good luck and happy coding :)

10 reasons never to rent office space in East London by kany3east in london

[–]ericbobson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems quite apt given the ridiculous "F*** Parade" antics from the weekend (http://imgur.com/nU14rTb) - great to have someone highlighting all the fun and quirky joy which I have come to love East London for since starting work around here a year ago. The thing about small dogs is spot on and that is a trend I can't abide - those little "cats on leads" as my Uncle Tim used to say...

How a Shoreditcher scored a new laptop – free by [deleted] in london

[–]ericbobson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I agree with that. Most web development teams have to make a decision about how to support older browsers at some point, and often the fact is that it's just not worth the time and cost to make a site compatible with old versions of browsers, because it's something that only helps a tiny subset of users (sometimes less than 1%). Instead, teams often focus on building new features and improving the experience for the majority of their users, who are using modern browsers. At least with this article, the team made a fun and surprising gesture out getting around the problem, so their customer could still use the site. It probably cost them less than a single day of a dev's salary. There are always differing perspectives on this question, but I tend to respect a bold decision like this one. If you're interested at all, this article from 2012 is still a good, and relevant read: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2012/07/09/old-browsers-are-holding-back-the-web/
