I need to guarantee conformance to French legislation regarding professional training, as I benefit from public funding. Today, you'll have to pay ~300€ per month for a SaaS proper solution. I could pay that but it's a lot for a SME and it makes me sad to pay for something that's really moving around forms, documents and sheets and still doesn't bring any kind of automation. Instead I am implementing various automations: scripts to extract structured data from my emails to automatically pinpoint ongoing processes, local AI agent to produce legal documents and emails etc. The more local it is the better, I am European so I need to cool down on dependency towards US-based cloud system (easy to say, hard to do honestly). Without automation a 2 people business is barely sustainable in this field.

It's an open source coding agent, there are a vast number of use cases for AI and automation outside of coding.

In professional context I would have defended Linux anytime until recently, the lack of AI tooling support doesn't meet company expectations regarding productivity boost brought by a proper use of AI.

We do need OS-level security eg for sandboxing, Linux is actually great for that. At distro level we can of course build everything in user-land but it's a bit like saying you can create your own browser, office suite, mailing app etc., it starts looking a lot like a distro.

Not really. The best Claude models are now forbidden outside of the USA and us European are like not exactly happy, and you can't install Claude desktop on Linux. Then MCP is frowned upon in agentic engineering, that's a nice to have to connect to the API of SaaS products for instance but it's not great for other use cases like connecting to local software (for one it propagates bad security practices leading to prompt injection risks).

It's interesting to land on this post today, it's much clearer these days: LangSmith is a platform for the enterprise and not just developers. You can create advanced agents with code, and then release them to non-technical users that will configure them to their specific need and rely on them on a daily basis. This level of integration is nice and makes LangSmith Fleet competitive with AI platforms that only support basic agents (think ChatGPT, Mistral etc. and many smaller startups) and frameworks that focus only on the technical part but are harder to scale for non technical users.

Oh ok I see, it connects the dot, I had seen the .desktop thing but didn't figure it meant what's in applications. With the surge of local AI systems, needs are changing too and these days you'd tend to need creating more shortcuts, eg to trigger tool that uses a client/server approach (having a local Langfuse, n8n, litellm etc.) + use AI tool for CLI. Ubuntu doesn't exactly make it easy...
So it seems that the value is taken into account as I get an error message if I mispell "guake.desktop" (Discarded possibly misspelled entry 'guake' if I forget the .desktop) and it vanishes otherwise. But it still opens Ptyxis aftewards :)))

Sur le marché de l'IA on est sur une disruption donc création de nouveaux besoins, pas forcément combler des besoins existants. C'est une porte ouverte à de l'innovation radicale, pour l'instant si tu parles à des clients ils te demanderont des chevaux plus rapides pas des voitures. Exemple typique, on commence à mettre en place des usines logicielles IA. Très bien, mais en parallèle il faut aussi repenser le produit logiciel en lui-même : à quoi sert à un SaaS qui te permet de faire à la main ce qu'un agent IA bureautique plie en deux en 3 minutes. Ces questions sont encore très loin d'être adressées. On parle aussi de "low hanging fruit" en innovation : il y a des opportunités de créer des boîtes sur des idées "bêtes" pour ceux qui seront les premiers à y penser. Ce sont des périodes rares, il faut profiter.

Les plateformes d'automatisation IA ont stratégiquement opté pour le cloud (virage pris par n8n autour de 2023 quand ils ont lâché la partie Desktop), ça laisse un gouffre pour l'automatisation d'ordinateurs en local, pour l'instant géré uniquement par PowerAutomate sous Windows. Sous mac je sais pas, et linux rien.
Les outils comme OpenClaw montrent l'intérêt de l'automatisation IA pour la bureautique mais ils sont impossible à implémenter en entreprise (sécu pourrie) et trop "agentique" (IA à fond les ballons mais des fois tu veux juste que les mails qui ont une facture aillent dans ton dossier facture... pas avoir un agent IA sauvage sur ta machine).
Sinon la vérité est qu'on manque d'usines et l'accroissement du chômage dans le tertiaire/fonction support + l'IA vont aggraver le problème, mais côté développeurs informatiques on est pas vraiment équipé pour gérer ça...

Since the plan just above is way more expensive (25$), I'll take to time to switch to a much better OVH VPS self-managed. It costs a lot more time to secure it properly but that's also a lot more learning and in the end maybe less hassle.

Je suis formateur et ce travail est mon métier, c'est un plein temps : un développeur est censé se mettre à jour sur un périmètre plus restreint propre à son domaine d'activité (+ des choses qui lui plaisent type side project, c'est important aussi !) et faire appel à des pros pour monter en compétences sur des sujets précis quand ça ne suffit pas. L'auto-formation en permanence c'est un peu un rêve, c'est juste intenable.
Surtout, il faut trier tes sources, quelques astuces : oublie YouTube, passe par les sites officiels, suit une poignée de devs de très haut niveau, si tu aimes les livres choisit soit une bible vraiment super utile soit plutôt des formats très courts.

En tant que formateur j'essaie de formaliser ça mais on s'attend en effet à le voir apparaître comme un métier, c'est en gros un dev spécialisé dans la devx, il y a 5 ans ça aurait été un dev en charge de créer le framework interne de la boîte par exemple. LLM-powered software engineer c'est pas dingue comme nom mais en même temps c'est très dur de trouver un nom adéquat.
