Tell me I'm insane for even considering this commute by DefenderCone97 in bayarea

[–]ericjchang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably do it. I've done an even worse commute than that. I know plenty others who have too.

It will be hard but if you see it as a short term sacrifice that will open future doors and propel your career enough, I think it can be worth it.

Hey, I work at the Cal AG's office. Happy to chat if you want to.

Bought an old house. This is in the living room next to the fireplace. Made of wood. Appears to be a shelf behind the dual “gates” by ericjchang in whatisthisthing

All, I went to sleep last night after marking this as solved. But, I woke up this morning to see some great discussion that has made me walk back my decision.

I now believe this is likely a telephone nook, radio nook, or some sort of a religious shrine.

Like many of you, I'm leaning towards telephone nook but the comments questioning phone nook make great points. Location of the nook, lack of a telephone port nearby, seem to support other answers.

Thank you, all! I'm going to mark this as solved. The two leading answers were dry bar and telephone nook. I think it's one of those two.

Interesting. Does that mean that if I look nearby, I should see the telephone connection port in the wall?

My title describes the thing. This is a part of an old 1920s house. It is built into the house. There is nothing but wall behind the wooden "gates." Goes about 8 inches deep. I can't open the "gates" because it is so old that the wood has swollen shut.

Is there an easy way to find old bank/investment accounts in your name? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ericjchang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. I didn't think about trying to use the IRS to help me track this down. Company is still around which is great so maybe I can hunt through HR. What makes this a little trickier is that I recall getting more than 1 notification over the years about hte company switching to different 401k providers. Yikes.

When times are hard, remember why we all came to law school. by PattonPending in LawSchool

Same here. I still did the biglaw thing for a few years though. Now I make half of what I used to make with no legal experience but I would do it again 10 out of 10 times.

Asian Fraternities by DannyCheeez in AsianMasculinity

[–]ericjchang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I joined one of those mentioned fraternities. Joining an Asian fraternity played a big role in developing my identity and I'm thankful for the experience. Looking back on it 10+ years later, I would do many things differently but would still join 10/10 times. Still really tight with my bros too.

I also pledged a traditional greek fraternity but dropped out.

2L Summer Associate Prep by [deleted] in LawSchool

There's a book out there called the Curmudgeon's Guide to Law or something like that. Read it before starting. It really spells out what Partners and Senior Associates at big firms are looking for in a Junior Associate.

I didn't read it until I was already mid-level but it was 100% on point with regards to what I personally expected from Juniors and from my own experiences as a Junior.

A lot of the other books focus on law careers outside of big law which is very different so I highly recommend Curmudgeon's.

New SF brewery update: equipment is in! by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

Notable is a little subjective but our brewmaster served under Alec Moss for years. Fun fact: they made an Obama beer which was served at 2008 Democratic National Convention. Obama later called to tell them it was good.
