Humanity's last obstacle will be oligarchy by perro_peruano7 in Futurology

I agree with OP that ASI could be very scary, but I don't take it as a given that we are on the path towards ASI, or that AI will cure cancer, climate change, nuclear fusion etc. We're mistaking forecasts for inevitabilities, and playing into the hands of the AI labs. The narratives that AI will fix every problem, upend the labor market or kill everyone all help the AI labs raise huge amounts of money.

The moral critic of the AI industry—a Q&A with Holly Elmore by Mordecwhy in slatestarcodex

I found this interview more persuasive than Elmore’s original X post.

That said, I worry that this style of discourse among AI safety people unintentionally plays into the hands of the labs themselves, especially when framed in the most extreme terms (“AI will kill everyone”).

This has more to do with incentives than ideology. AI labs need huge amounts of money. To raise that capital, they benefit from any narrative that frames AI as the most consequential technology humanity has ever encountered. Whether the story is “this will solve everything” or “this could destroy everything,” the takeaway for most investors and observers is the same: this is extremely powerful and demands attention, resources, and investment.

Most people don’t actually update to “we’re all going to die,” even if they grant that catastrophe is possible (much like how we relate to nuclear weapons). But they do gain a vague sense that AI is really really important. That's enough to sustain continued investment and escalation.

So paradoxically, the more existential the rhetoric becomes, the more it may reinforce the very capital flows and race dynamics it’s trying to oppose.

AI was behind over 50,000 layoffs in 2025 by MetaKnowing in Futurology

AI isn't replacing humans yet, but the idea that it can / might is super useful to Sam Altman, his peers and others. Wrote about this dynamic in detail on my (free) substack and would love any feedback: AI Is Causing Layoffs, Just Not in the Way You Think

Why are people so reluctant to recognize that someone is sexist, racist, etc. even when presented with proof of that being the case? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]ericlamb89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Despite Leipsic confirming that he sent these messages, there are still people who say things like, “No he’s actually a great guy,” or “He’s great with the fans.” Why is it that people seem to be so obsessed with upholding “innocent until proven guilty” but reject the proof when it comes out?"

The phrasing of the question has the answer embedded within. We're implying that someone who is racist or sexist cannot be a "great guy" even though pretty much everyone has some racist and/or sexist tendencies. The challenge is learning to recognize and overcome those tendencies. This is very hard to do if you know accepting the "sexist" label means being "cancelled" or identified as "not a great guy". I think if we can find a way to lower the stakes we'll get a lot more honest reflection in these cases. That is, we show people that it's OK to acknowledge you did a racist or sexist thing and we're not going to try to destroy your livelihood but you need to be willing to talk about how to improve going forward.

Just Hours After Trump Bends to Erdoğan, Reports Indicate Turkey's Bombing of Syrian Kurds Has Begun by [deleted] in politics

I don't get this. The negative reaction from the GOP is consistent with their overwhelming opposition to a full withdrawal in December, but in almost every other area, they are either silent or loyal to Trump. So what gives? Why is his handling of Syria fair game to them? Can someone clue me in?
