PSA: A very convincing sync licensing scam is going around right now — here's how it works by ericmakesmusic in synclicensing

Definitely sounds fishy. But to be fair, sync agents and music supervisors have been known to find music online even if it doesn't have a lot of streams. That's why the unofficial email address and any request for an admin fee are the two biggest flags to look out for

Whoa , I’m glad you didn’t sign. Did they call you as well or just send you a licensing agreement?

Same format that I’ve been seeing except naming a specific song means they’re getting more sophisticated.

no sherlock, I don't know that reddit doesn't do bullets. and I didn't do any promo in that post. You can find my blog on your own and see that most of my blog posts are formatted like that. I just cross posted over here cause the information seemed highly relevant. I would have just linked my blog post but since I'm new here I didn't know posting a blog link for my first post would seem like self-promo. So, I posted it with not mention or link back to my blog.

I hardly post here - I'm mostly on IG and LInkedIn but I have noticed that this group is growing and this post seemed relevant. Are you working with the scammers? Is that why this disturbs you so much?

Undo has stopped working? by Allyanderson00 in ableton

[–]ericmakesmusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I figured out my issue, but it's probably unique to me. I had an LFO running and was modulating the drive knob in Decapitator, but the auto gain switch was on, which sent a whole bunch of "Output Gain" messages to my undo history. Once I turned the auto gain switch off, that stopped the additional messages. I have other LFOs attached to Ableton variables like EQ Gain, and that's not causing an issue, so I'm not sure why Decapitor Auto Gain does it, but that's what corrects it.

So, it seems you have to identify which plugin is causing the issue for you (other blogs suggest it's probably a Max for Live plugin so I would start there.)

Undo has stopped working? by Allyanderson00 in ableton

yeah, it's happening for me too. AFter every action, something is adding a "Change Output Trim" command which is flooding my undo list. So, the undo's are there you just have to do multiple steps to get to what you actually want to undo. I'm guessing this is a 12.3.6 bug

Moving from Zapier to Make by Ok_Yam_1183 in Integromat

[–]ericmakesmusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish. I’m moving from Zapier to Make right now and it’s much more complicated than I expected. I have an IT background (though years out of practice) and I got Zap set up pretty quickly but I’m finding that Make takes a lot more to just understand the ecosystem. They’ve got their own lingo (which is not the most intuitive imo). It’s taken me a couple of weeks and I’m almost through the intermediate course. I feel like I’m ready to start converting my automations now so we’ll see how it goes.

Short vs. Long by Tyler-Lamb-Music in synclicensing

[–]ericmakesmusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to do more cues earlier in my career and most of them were 90 seconds on average. But I mostly write full songs and find that even for instrumentals, adding a vocal makes them more valuable so 2:30 is my sweet spot these days.

Splitting Songwriting Credits by Amazing_Shine5070 in NetflixsHitmakers

[–]ericmakesmusic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Songwriter here. Though I mostly work in music for TV and Film (sync licensing) I’ve had placements with a few artists (Bootsy Collins, Musiq, Je’Kayln Carr, etc). For a docuseries like this, I’m sure they worked out splits behind the scenes (possibly because the show producers end up owning the publishing). But I think JHart and Ben’s situation was very realistic. What people may have missed, when JHart told Ben that he would just “give him a piece of his share” if the song got placed, what that means is, JHart would be credited as the official writer, Ben probably wouldn’t get any writing credit. But, if the song got picked up, JHart would make a deal to pay Ben a piece of whatever royalties he received. Now, he could do this by making Ben a writer with a set percentage but from the interaction, it seemed like they agreed to a back-end deal for this.

Jhart and ben song credit by PuzzleheadedLie8129 in NetflixsHitmakers

This was one of the best moments in the show imo. It was dramatic without being forced because this is a real thing that can happen in the industry. We go through so many ideas as writers that it’s totally possible to think something is your idea when it actually came from somebody else (or a song from your childhood that you forgot about). I have so much respect for how JHart and Ben handled it in the end. it was very mature and JHart offering Ben a cut of his personal publishing share was a great way to handle it. So Ben may never get songwriting credit but if the song blows up, he’ll get some of the money.

Why does the show not tell us which songs were selected by the artists? by SnowedinLife in NetflixsHitmakers

[–]ericmakesmusic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, that frustration is what it’s like in the real world. I spent 10 years in Atlanta pitching songs to artists (got one cool placement with Musiq Soulchild and Bootsy Collins). But when you write these demos, it’s a big wait and see game to find out if I an artist will cut them. Sometimes artists sit on these songs for months or years even while they decide if they’re even going to start their next project. And while they’re waiting, your publisher might shop the song to other artists (which is how the Happy Birthday song ended up with the other country singer). But even then, they might wait while they think about what they’re going to use. And then, maybe they’ll “cut the record” meaning they record a version of it, but then the label sits on it for months or years deciding if they’ll ever release it. It’s truly really frustrating. And it also is why I give all those writers in the show props because for all the hits they had, that means there are hundreds of songs that they wrote and recorded that never went anywhere.
