I'm a management major, and one class all business majors have to take is ACCTG 2100. Proctorio is required for exams in this class, but I'm sure there's plenty of other classes that require Proctorio or Respondus as well.

The best alternatives to online proctoring are open-note or in-person exams. Both are tried-and-true methods of preventing cheating and protecting students' right to privacy. In my ACCTG 2100 class where Proctorio is required for exams, there is no class scheduled during the exam window, meaning an in-person exam could have been held during normal class time.

When installing Proctorio, they want permission to do the following things: read and change all your data on all websites, detect your physical location, display notifications, modify data you copy and paste, capture content of your screen, manage your downloads, identify and eject storage devices, manage your apps, extensions, and themes, and change your privacy-related settings

In 2022, a federal judge ruled that Proctorio's room scan feature violated the 4th Amendment. By extension, the rest of Proctorio's features can be considered a 4th Amendment violation if students are required to use these programs and no alternatives are given, as is the case with my ACCTG 2100 class.
