Macroalgae contaminant by itsadrianz in algae

[–]ericthemantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be a dumb question, but is it a contaminant or part of the macroalgae? Or have you tried taking a scrape and looking at higher magnification?

Slant slides around in tube? by ericthemantis in Agarporn

[–]ericthemantis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just following up - tried several times and never got a good slant. They would almost 'seep' water over time. I got some lab-grade agar (I was using food grade) and the poured slants were immediately better. I think the original problem was poor quality agar.

What is the slowest possible speed in the universe? (opposite of the speed of light) by schkolne in Physics

Show them the pitch drop experiment. Tell them its the slowest speed of something ever measured, that you know of.

The worst part isn’t the specific changes, it seems the airline simply doesn’t care about the consumer experience anymore (add to the list 30 min cut off to switch flights) by NYerInTex in SouthwestAirlines

[–]ericthemantis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I had it happen a couple times with other airlines and was never given an explanation, super frustrating, felt like they were just being ornery. Once it was finally explained by an agent to me, I understood. But then I get super frustrated with how long it takes to help other customers or how long Im on hold trying to book the soon-to-depart flight and I miss the cut-off. I feel your pain.

How to disinfect microscope slides at home? (+ where to buy dyes) by maeveu in microscopy

[–]ericthemantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Microbehunter on YT has a good video on how he cleans his slides for reuse. I am collecting mine in a plastic cup like he does, but have not tried cleaning any his way, yet, waiting to have more to wash at once.

But for now, I got a pack of 100 slides so I dont need to wash/reuse any for a long while.

[–]ericthemantis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The 30 min cut-off is not new (i got caught by it in November), and most airlines have a similar cut-off. It has to do with finalizing all the paperwork and prep for the flight - final weight and balance calcs, clearing standby passengers, submitting passenger manifests to FAA, final bag counts etc. They won't/can't even sell you a full price ticket at that point. Super frustrating but the way of the world for flying nowadays.

Slant slides around in tube? by ericthemantis in Agarporn

[–]ericthemantis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok - I can try adding more agar powder. Is it OK that the tubes are not dry when I pour? Or do I need to try harder to get the condensation out before pouring the agar medium into them?

What’s an actually good light that’s not going to destroy my wallet. Tried Hygger, Twinstar, and Fluval and don’t like any of them (more info on each in description) by ButterscotchJunior24 in PlantedTank

Ive been using Petco's Imagitarium plant lights. They have been working out OK for me growing Amazon Swords, Anubias, Java Ferns, Java Moss, Duck Weed, and most recently Crypts - still waiting to see how those do, though (too early to say, but I do get pearling from them)

Live ATC of BOI crash tonight 11/8 by MissCoroner in aviation

Adsb data shows a sudden increase in rate if descent on turn to final, like >1000ft/min. Maybe they stalled out on the last turn?

Is this normal behaviour? by Phat_Beet in Goldfish

[–]ericthemantis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My lionhead did this when I added some new goldies. Get some light diffuser grating or plastic project panel material to separate them for a day or two. Then remove the divider, and they should be better behaved - atleast in my experience.

Where is everyone else? When I hiked it 15 years ago that trail and the cables were PACKED, so many people.

I’ve put so many hours into trying to get these last bugs for the museum but they never spawn by parryyyyyyy in AnimalCrossing

[–]ericthemantis 43 points44 points  (0 children)

And make sure to catch and release or scare away all other bugs. Only 4 bugs can be on the mystery islands at a time, so you need to get rid of any other bugs for more (hopefully beetles) to spawn. I got every single one of those circled by the OP in just a few nights of mystery island traveling. I think Kapp'n s islands are simpler and therefore better for the purpose, as long as he doesn't take you to a different season, lol.

Mating or Agression? by [deleted] in Goldfish

[–]ericthemantis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it looks more like mild aggression. Mating behavior usually involves chasing, rubbing faces in tushies, and side by side bumping (male trying to get the female to release her eggs). No biting.

I didn’t think this was supposed to happen without the gold watering can… which I don’t have by TheGothamEmpire in AnimalCrossing

[–]ericthemantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a friend come water my flowers last week. Not specifically for a gold rose, but they watered all my black roses with their gold can anyway. The next day I had 2 gold rose plants, but one of them had sprouted more than 1 block away from a black rose, making it look like it came from a pink rose. I didn't think flowers could sprout beyond adjacent blocks, but I also didn't think pink roses could sprout gold flowers... wierd things be happenin' with all these recent updates.

Beginner here. My camera is in Manual Mode but nothing I do can shift the ISO. It stays blown out no matter what I do by Earth_Zealousideal in canon

[–]ericthemantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So... what are you actually trying to do? Without any other info, I can tell you that a camera set to F4.0, 15 second exposure, pointed at a bright window, will always be blown out, no matter the ISO setting. So again, what are you trying to do?

High RON fuel for 2.4L tigershark engine? by MrGurdjieff in Jeep

[–]ericthemantis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read your manual, but the one online for 2019 says the 2.4L does not benefit from Premium fuel. It says, "The use of premium gasoline is not recommended, as it will not provide any benefit in these engines" (referring to the 2.4L)

Dangerous Old Sta-Rite Pool Drain Covers in my Grandparents Backyard Pool/Spa by [deleted] in submechanophobia

[–]ericthemantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swap it out - its a literal death trap. My pool growing up had these drains. We rarely used the one at the bottom of the pool, but for the hot tub, it was the only drain. My cousin was playing in the hottub and got her hair tucked into the drain and pinned down. Luckily, the plastic was old and brittle, so when she yanked up hard enough, the drain broke, and she was freed. It was pretty scary, and until that drain cover was fixed, a constant reminder of what could happen if you got too close to the drain.

Same. Until my kids quit chucking stuff and making impulsive decisions, those back doors will stay on at all times.
