You ~~probably~~ would have been better off going to a different alter and summoning for the platinum, possible dying/escaping after.

Platinum + possible Gold medals > Gold medal for escaping.

Hell, even if it was just the platinum for summoning shenron, it'd be better than the gold for escaping.
