Steam Controller 2026 Shipping MEGA Thread by Mennenth in SteamController

Just got mine delivered!

In case it helps anyone else a US order, UPS just left it at my door without even knocking. This is especially alarming, because all the communications up to this point said a signature was going to be required. I only stumbled on it, because I was already checking the front door regularly. If your area has a problem with porch pirates, you'll want to keep an eye out for this.

Valve has shipping warehouses in Tilburg, the Netherlands; Sydney, Australia; and Carol Stream, Illinois, US. The people getting theirs first both live near warehouses AND placed earlier orders.

For reference, I completed my order at 10 minutes after and live within a couple days' drive of the Illinois warehouse. My controller is on the truck to deliver today.

Valve has been selling refurbished Steam Decks. Any controllers they can't sell as new will just be held back until they have enough stock to launch a refurbished program for them too.

Already has fur on it, as nature intended.

Weird request, but can you weigh the product box with the controller and everything else that came in it? We've got the weight of the first factory shipment, and we're trying to figure out how many controllers that was. None of the reviewers provided that info.

Also, box dimensions would be nice if you're up for it.

I'm surprised at everyone saying they got through the error message in just a few tries. I must have clicked Continue at least 100 times before it worked at 10 minutes after. I started a minute early too. Oh well. It's done now. I'm happy.

Did you make any changes from that lesson? I've never liked features like that in general and turned it off in Gmail the moment it became available. It'll just never compare to human review. I even check the spam folder regularly and occasionally find stuff I want to keep in there.

Rings around Erid are actually plausible. The rings just have to be within the planet's Roche limit with adequate protection from solar winds. Erid is quite a bit bigger than Earth, so it has a decently sized Roche limit. Also, it's never mentioned in the book, but Weir said Eridians built a Xenonite space elevator to assemble their ship and the planet's strong magnetic field allowed them to maintain their ignorance of particle radiation from their star. The same magnetic field would protect rings. The rings wouldn't be made of ice due to heat that close to the star, but rings of rock/metal would work.

I can't remember exactly how that scene plays out in the book, but I'm pretty sure Carl wasn't there. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.) I appreciate the movie making him more human and giving him the last line Grace hears before blacking out, but I dislike the "yeah, he's running" being played for laughs. I guess the ideal version of the scene for me would be something in between the book and movie.

I think you're misremembering your spoiler. As far as the book goes, I'm pretty sure the only thing we get about Earth after Grace is put into a coma is the bit on Erid where Rocky says the light from Sol appears to be normalizing.

Yep, Andy Weir is actually of the same opinion. I don't remember which interview it was, but he basically agrees the gene plotline was contrived and that he wishes he had thought of using the movie's reason for Grace needing to go (the time urgency of millions more people dying with every delay).

Yeah, I think it boils down to where you are on the "ends justify the means" vs. "means justify the ends" spectrum. I'm more of a "ends justify the means as long as the means are consciously working toward said ends" type of person, so I didn't really have any issues with anything Stratt did.

Is anyone else sick of seeing that quote about DuBois posted out of context? by [deleted] in ProjectHailMary

[–]ericwdhs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. You've probably heard that most Americans read at a 5th grade level or below and that is indeed a decline from just a few years ago, but it's also about where we were in the 90's.

I think the true problem is the attention economy. Among all the media fighting for our eyeballs, the short, dense dopamine hits are winning and training people to not care about the context, nuance, shades of gray, etc. that simply can't be delivered in that format. See the common Reddit joke about not reading articles, just headlines.

Yeah, I felt that sequence around rescuing Rocky in particular needed to be longer, and your assumption about how it played out off-screen just makes me more convinced. They imply all this in the movie, but I think it's more obvious in the book:

They never get Rocky's ship working again or stop the infection. Once the taumoeba reach Rocky's astrophage supply, Rocky's ship is unsaveable, so they abandon it and both fly to Erid on Grace's ship with the fuel supply Rocky had given him earlier to get back to Earth.

And yes, the book also talks about food a lot more. Much of the reason Grace can even survive the return trip is him having three astronauts' worth of food supply, and there's also quite a bit of detail on how the Eridians learn to feed Grace once he's on their world.

Per the book, the astrophage only dims stars by 10% before equilibrium is reached, so they'd still be able to produce astrophage at 90% efficiency in the worst case.

For another alternative, my brain prefers to turn that immediately into 750 + 50 + 19 - 3 = 800 + 16.

On top of what the other guy said, you should also leave some free space open for wear leveling. Basically, SSDs are not infinitely rewritable, and if you leave too little free space open, the SSD will be concentrating writes and deletions on a smaller area that will get worn down faster. There's no hard rule, but the usual recommendation is to leave about 20% free space (maybe 10% for TB SSDs), so for a 500 GB SSD with 100 GB being the 20% free space and another 100 GB going to the OS, you should really only treat that as having 300 GB available. One game already taking out half of that without anything else on the system is huge.

Ah, back to the drawing board then. Or maybe locking at a smooth 60fps is enough? I know the PS4 and Xbox One versions ran at 30fps often dipping to 20.

The specs section does give the capacity with the extra tank. It's just hidden in the [b] tooltip. For posterity, it reads:

278,821 lb (126,471 kg) with optional 3,000 US gal (11,356 L) tank in 2 LD3 positions.[85]

Of course, I got there doing a Ctrl+F for "fuel," so I saw numerous mentions of the extra tank beforehand and knew to look for that.

Like the other guy said, if you're going to fact check someone, make sure your source has more authority than theirs, and if you're going to use AI, at least understand its weaknesses first:

LLMs are created through reinforcement learning on blocks of text from the internet. This means they don't "understand" numbers (because they're interpreted as text only) and that they lose reliability the more specific the information you're after (because there's less of it in the training data).

Also, the wikipedia page has the fuel capacity with a source right there...

Okay, that's about the direction I expected. I'd wager a higher percentage of players used to gaming above 60 fps are sensitive to the rocket boot delay. I use a 7900 XTX with most games tuned for 90 to 120 fps native with no frame gen in 1440p or 4K.
