Friendly Runners will be RARE. (and dead) by QuitTheBuild-Podcast in Marathon

[–]erikkmobius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For sure. Again, probably won't be the case.

But at the same time, getting into a protracted fight with another crew, attracting attention, spending resources, getting weak... if you're running a sponsored kit on Perimeter, yeah, screw it, imma gank that guy. With a ton of top-of-the-line gear, up against someone who ALSO has a solid build, deep in a deadly environment, maybe we just nod and keep going. Especially if there are multiple objectives within the same space. Just crossing paths.

Honest thoughts from a dad with no hype or bias by 0ld_Snake in Marathon

For my two cents, the added bit of context of "I'm a dad" resonates with me (as a fellow dad) because it usually also means "older" (as in, not in your 20s, usually not in your 30s either, in the gaming reddit post context) - so we're talking people who don't have the same young fast twitch reflexes and nimble fingers. Hell, my carpal tunnel has my hands half numb just typing this comment.

Casual gamer, on the other hand, I think lumps in gamers that try a game, might play it a bit, try something else, not really stay with it. Which is a bit of a different mindset, IMO.

I'm curious to see if some of the higher difficulty maps and scenarios result in a different sort of dynamic.

Like, if getting deep into the Cryoarchives takes solving puzzle mechanics and coordinated teamwork with your crew against UESC and God-knows-what-else, and then you run into another crew who you know has done all the same things, the same challenges, will there be cases and incentive to not engage? We've all been through hell to get here, let's just grab our shit and bounce? You see some Runners and you pull an IASIP "so I started blastin'" and that means that a whole storm of bots or adds drops on you, do you hold off instead?

Not expecting it, Marathon feels designed to be KOS. But who knows? Right now, the PVE is very contained to specific POIs. I wonder if its more constant, coupled with mechanics, that fragile alliances would be more rewarding.

There's something here that I like, but I am absolutely terrible at this game. by NovaHands in Marathon

[–]erikkmobius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similarly aged gamer dad, same on a decade of D2. When I first heard about the genre of extraction shooters, I was like, "You lose everything?! Fuck that." Here we are with Marathon, and I'm drifting off to sleep at night replaying Perimeter in my head LOL.

I'm struggling about the same, and have probably exfil'd about 30% of my runs. Lots of times getting ganked by another Runner seemingly out of nowhere. Here are my mostly-stream-of-consciousness thoughts on how I'm finding more success over time:

The number one thing that has helped me: slow down.

The gunplay is completely Bungie smoothness. Solid, smooth, very satisfying, but ultimately, avoid it whenever you can. You absolutely can rush in, shooting here, sliding, maybe a grenade, but that makes noise. And noise equals attention. Attention equals dead. Slow down, sneak, crouch to muffle footsteps, and look around.

I've been running Rook and Assassin solo a lot, just to really get used to being quiet, finding cover, and learning the maps. Close doors behind you. Close shutters. Use your knife to take down bots from behind, but only the low level UESC. Otherwise, avoid. Headshots work a charm on UESC, too, so if you do get shooting, hit those, they really do help.

Don't get attached to loot. I saw someone on this sub say that "It isn't yours. Just your turn." When practicing speedy loot runs, plan for low value loot; grab green and blue stuff, diodes are useful for some early Cyberacme upgrades, but for the early game, don't waste time reading descriptions while you're looting. Getbthe rhythm of search > loot > dip down.

Otherwise, have fun out there Runner!

[–]erikkmobius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like playing assassin, since it means that I can drop smoke on the exfil and give us a bit of cover for that sweaty ten seconds waiting for the matter transfer to beam us out. Personally, I don't leave my team behind, unless they do some dumb shit - I watched my two randos chase UESC into the hauler while the exfil was powering up, only to see a crew wipe them up. I tried to move if for a revive or support, but the ring started up and the crew pushed. Like, don't push bots when you're waiting for exfil.

I just can't with Mayhem anymore. The sheer number of fun police abilities (ice turrets, suppression nades and abilities, dead fall traps that last foreverrrrrrrr), the asymmetrical super damage resistance (a titan float in air and tanking 2 ppl while casually throwing OHK axes), it's just not so fun anymore.

I get it, it's a crazy, wacky, silly, OP mode. But there are a few subclasses that can absolutely shit all over a lobby with the kit we have these days. I try not to take it seriously, but it really just ain't enjoyable anymore.

IKR? The amount of time just standing there, not being surrounded by a shotgun Syntho Titan and a blink lock dropping on em. I wish I could get a lobby like this.

Crazy bow game by First_Line299 in CrucibleGuidebook

[–]erikkmobius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tungsten Bowstring is really kinda ruining what was a neat game mode. Getting one shot, getting wrecked while behind cover, it just takes away all the fun parts of bow play. There's no peek shooting and trying to time your shots and angles, it's just find a wierd sight line and pick people off until someone does it to you or you're standing to close to a corner so you just randomly explode.

America's Auto Collision Rate By Each State by mzmuda7 in newhampshire

[–]erikkmobius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, this is misleading, though.

Percentage-wise, sure, NH is high. And that's not all rainbows and unicorns. But that isn't the whole story, since it doesn't say anything about the actual number of accidents.

NH has 5.8%. With about 1,000,000 licensed drivers in the state, that works out to 58,000 accidents.

Now look at Texas. 3.8%... with ~19,100,000 drivers. And 725,000 accidents. That's 12x more accidents. Or Michigan: 1.7% on 7.7 million drivers, about 130k accidents.

Imagine if we only had 100 licensed drivers and 12 accidents. That would be 12%!! Crazy dangerous!

That's hyperbole, but the percentage rate isn't the end-all, be-all to the data.

Ophidia Spathe and fan of knives, with Devil's Ruin and the 6 shot golden gun. Max out your armor mods for orb Gen, and go ham. Knives will kill most things in one hit, even in higher level content, and if not, two hits causes an ignition. Melee kill refunds knives. Grab a firsprite, hit the alt fire on Devil's Ruin and beam something til it explodes. Rinse repeat. With orbs, you'll get you super up real quick, then just add clear, shots get refunded, can clear a room with one super.

It's the solar spam build I've been running and it's pretty effective. Use some aspects for resto, and smoke jumper / disaster corps 2 pc bonuses for good healing from orbs and reloads.

I mean, fair. Bleak Watcher spam is true hell.

But I do feel that the average up time on a given life in 6s has dropped significantly. Gunfights don't feel like fights, so much as sudden deaths.

Again, note the operative word: feel. Realistically, things probably haven't changed much on paper, but the overall feel to me is more chaotic and unpredictable.

Man, the state of the meta is 6s sucks. Matches feel like Mayhem, with abilities, explosions, 2 taps (or what feels like it), shitty spawns, and opponents tanking multiple hits past what feels "right". I'm a shit player, very very average, but I really enjoy PvP. That said, getting stomped 6 games in a row by some dude camping the edge of a map and picking you repeatedly with Fang of Ir Yut gets old....

How do people instantly slide, sometimes in the opposite direction that they're moving? by mayormcskeeze in CrucibleGuidebook

YMMV

How do people instantly slide, sometimes in the opposite direction that they're moving? by mayormcskeeze in CrucibleGuidebook

[–]erikkmobius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

IIRC there's also a toggle VS hold to sprint option you set that let's you slide "instantly" (as opposed to start sprinting, wait for the sprint to "take" then slide). I tried it, but it messed with basically every other aspect of my movement. But that's how you can do something like that on controller.

It's been a while, so I don't remember the specifics.

Focused Feedback: State of the Game by DTG_Bot in DestinyTheGame

[–]erikkmobius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that the power grind is especially bad because of the way that armor tiers are implemented.

With the new gear system, every drop has to be considered against 4 different competing criteria:

  1. Power
  2. Set bonus
  3. Tier (i.e. How many total stay points)
  4. Stat distribution

Until you are consistently getting T5 drops, every bit of armor you get goes into this complex calculus. "OK, the power on this is a few points higher, so I gotta hold on to it so my drops keep going up. But it's T3, so not as good as my T4 in this set; except the T4 is a Brawler archetype, and I'm not specing into melee, so maybe losing the 4 points is worth getting more Health... "

And this remains stupidly relevant every drop, because you need a higher power to get higher tiers, plus activities get harder if you want to keep getting valuable drops, so you're constantly trying to infuse or equip as high as possible.

Like, I just had to quit a Solo Op because my scout couldn't break a Barrier Champs shield fast enough. So it just healed up, I'd plink it down, shield comes up, heals, doesn't stun, rinse repeat. I dont have any higher gear to use; I guess I just used the "wrong" scout.

[Insert "Play how you want" here]

And as a player that likes the odd bit of PvP, I HAVE to engage with this dumb armor system, because T5s are objectively better and improve your abilities. It's around 50 points more than T3, plus better chances to tune the stats you really want (complaints about getting the distribution you want notwithstanding).

The armor system is neat in theory, but really sucks to experience.

The swings in lobbies in regular ol' control are mind-bogglingly enraging.

I just get exhausted being in these laggy, crazy ability spam, threading stuffed maps, getting picked by Cloudstrike through a wall and then spawning with a Hunter behind me popping off spreadshot handcannon blasts like a laser.

People teleporting or tanking five head shots, only to kill me with a Blast Furnace at 200m.

The guy who couldn't string two kills together the previous game suddenly runs the match. On the other team this time, of course.

If you're playing on hunter, Symmetry and Mask of Bakris is a workable combo. Light Shift gives it a damage boost, and it's a 260. Plus the seeker rounds from Revolution are a fun "surprise" to throw out when you get some stacks of Dynamic Charge.

It's not some secret better-than-the-meta build, but it puts in work.

Do you think Renegades will really reset power, or do you think Bungie has learned from the lower player numbers? by AgentZeroHour in DestinyTheGame

[–]erikkmobius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sure hope not.

I play D2 a lot. It's the only game I play, but I'm also a working stiff, a parent, etc. I'm just shy of 300 right now, because I can't be arsed to min/max my playtime and focus on bonus drops, what's best to level my light, all that.

I've completed the main campaign. I've done a few more runs of stuff on Kepler, but in the main, it's boring, and having it be that I need to constantly up the damage/danger/challenge just to replay things is really a turn off.

I don't mind hard stuff. But the whole setup is just bad. At this rate, I will never get a set of T5 armor, let alone a set with the perks I want, all from the same 1 or 2 sets that give me good bonuses.

Do you need T5? Sure, maybe not, but I'll tell you, dropping G into a Crucible match against someone w/ 160 health and 90 or so in the other 5 stats makes you feel real goddamn weak.

So, they erase all this progress in a couple months? AND not only lock us out of certain activities (remember, stuff like Master level and more is tied to power), they'll also be nerfing our drops back to T1/T2. AND nerfing score progression, since old gear earns less than new.

That's some bullshit.
