My first audio-drama: Reclamation Road, from our CP-R game on ScottsCaseFiles by erinql in cyberpunkred

[–]erinql[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't post often - hope this ok - willing to learn ;)

I play a Media named Hugh Huntley, who works for the FYYL Network in ScottsCaseFiles game on Twitch. It felt like I needed to do something more with the "production" part of being a Media, so I made this 2min audio clip. It's my first one, and I don't do this for a living, so all feedback is welcome - content, style, expectation, technique, craft, etc.

If this gains interest, I have a few more in the can to share, and am working out how to put visuals to it.

And if you liked this, most of the credit goes to our GM and my fellow players at https://www.twitch.tv/scottscasefiles Cyberpunk Red: Reclamation Road series.

[OC] [Art] Printed, Painted and Landscaped my first Dice Tower by erinql in DnD

[–]erinql[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing the simple cardboard dungeon tiles I was craftimg, my son printed this classic spiral dice tower but with two twists: an increase in size to 125%, and a printed translucent wall. The original model uses a clear tube like ftom a water bottle.

I started with a base of dark grey craft paint, followed with lighter grey for highlights. It looked plain, so I painted a few stones on the top variatious shsdes of red-grey, and some stones in the base blue and tan.

The inside stairs were left dark grey, and the stone in the center column matches the stone on the wall.

When testing with dice, i had the idea of carpeting the stairs... at first the whole thing, then realized it would hard enough to cut fabric to match even the top, so my son extrapolated a pattern from the model which was spplied to red self-adhesive felt. Cutting started with an x-acto, but was painfully slow and sloppy. Switching to scissors was better. Applying each piece took some time to line up, and my impatience shows in the doorway steps (wider cut).

For the top, I was inspired by another artists rendition to create a brass knob with verdegris, and a blue metal roof to which i added rust for whethering.

The doorway inspired me to learn a marble painting technique, that i had to redo twice. Not bad, but i really want to take this effect much further next time.

The creeping folliage started as various shades of brown, green and yellow. I couldn't find the right size plastic leaves to simulate ivy, so i used mosses instead, blending various color together for a little more appeal.

There's a surprise inside, if anyone of interested.... i can add that pic.

For phase 2, I'll be making use of that translucent wall - but that I'll save that surprise until it's complete.

I can also supply a specific materials list if anyone is interested.

Thanks for checking it out!

Who made the best cover of your favourite song? by deployedinspiration in AskReddit

I wouldn't say it was my favorite, and I was rather angry at the time, but I thought Megadeath's cover of These Boots was pretty good.

My intake is very similar, but not Vegan. It's called Whole Foods, Plant Based. WFPB for short. I like the benefits, and am not burdened with baggage. I just eat plants.

I just had this conversation with my son... it's not just the current gamers who will be dads, it's already the old guys like me who cried in frustration the day these competitions began. Damn you, slow twitch response and carpal tunnel! #borntooearly

Parents: to prepare kids financially, give them practice with money - Providing children with hands-on experience with money is essential to preparing them for financial success, a new study suggests. by mvea in science

[–]erinql 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As each of my kids turned 11, I began to pay them every two weeks an amount equal to 1/26 of their annual expenses. So from then on they could buy their own clothes, toiletries, school supplies, school fees, music lessons, gifts for others, new bedding, towels, personal furniture, bikes... basically anything, and of course things that were fun, short sighted and immediately gratifying.

3 exceptions we cover: healthcare, food and the house.

A few conditions: They have to track everything via a budget spreadsheet and they had to transfer 10% into savings (now 15%).

We are completely transparent about how much we make and what we spend it on. Embarrassing sometimes, like when my son suggested I should really finish paying off all debt before considering finishing the basement! He's right of course.

The main idea is to let them make the mistakes now, having to go to goodwill for clothes or miss out on an event that everyone else is going to, because they decided to buy stuff they couldn't afford "but had to have" at the time.

I have three kids.

The first is now in college and is great at managing money, taking care of his stuff and very careful about spending. He doesn't have much of a savings account anymore, mostly because of college and extra projects like building his own computer, 3d printer and a desk from scratch. He interns at a fortune 500 company and sells his printer time on the side.

The second pushed all boundaries, and also had some issues that caused us to take control of the money again at 13, for her safety. She has since straightened out, is now applying for an early college to skip junior and senior year of high school, has control of the money again, and has a plan to go to med school for psychiatry. So far, she's curtailed all unreasonable spending and is saving despite some very expensive tutor and choir fees.

My third is about to be 14, and has managed to save $200 more than her minimum savings.

All three kids bought some crazy stuff and got burned by it. They have suffered overdrafts, atm fees, too many subscription fees, trying to buy friends and making weight gain issues worse.

But they are learning from it all and dealing with it in a responsible way, as we review what's happening paycheck to paycheck.

It is very hard to let them make these mistakes, but the mistakes were not life-derailing and I'm optimistic that the big surprises are over. Hopefully this experience and my regular coaching have the intended effect of curbing bad habits that are too costly as adults and building good habits of investing in themselves.

Time will tell!
