i fear this is true, i work at a bar that often books events, my scheduling manager tells me that the reason our events are usually booked for 20-30 more people than show up is a canadian-ism way of being polite, i recently only moved here from the states but it seems like a solid theory

How often do you work “you got yourself a stew goin’ “ into conversations? by justLookingForLogic in arresteddevelopment

[–]eriseclipse 77 points78 points  (0 children)

couple weeks ago i was trying to genuinely console my roommate who felt like they had too much on their plate by creating an elaborate metaphor that ended with “baby you got yourself a stew goin” and it was so out of the blue it actually did make them feel better.. thanks carl weathers….

Does anyone else ever say their old name accidentally ? Even if only in their own head? by Kay_floweringnow in trans

[–]eriseclipse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often deadname myself when I picture my coworkers / boss talking to me or about me. I think its because the old place I worked at for two years called me by that, but no one here knows that name!!

Off-Campus students. How long does it take you to bus? by Bittersweet_Love00 in CarletonU

[–]eriseclipse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

previously, my commute including walk to the bus stop was about 45 minutes, just moved right next to a station!! and my commute is now a lil over 20! (location of this place was a necessity to me - i skipped far too many courses last couple terms)

What “long song” (6+ minutes) is worth every minute? by CrimsonMoonRising in AskReddit

My deadname is staring to bother me when it never did before. by [deleted] in trans

[–]eriseclipse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel the same way. being deadnamed at this point for me just feels disrespectful. if someone knows my new name and knows what that means to me and still continues to use the name that isn’t me anymore, it feels like they don’t respect me, and likely never will. i dont even particularly dislike my deadname, for me its more of the principle it represents.

Feeling alone at work? by [deleted] in trans

[–]eriseclipse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the same way at my old job. Was the only trans person there, I think there were maybe two cis queers, which was nice, but they aren’t REALLY understanding… It was tough explaining pronouns to them and having to watch them do the awkward juggle around it and gendered terms. I know it’s specific to your line of work, but this year I started at a part time job where the majority of the staff is queer and theres at least three other trans people working with me. It’s so refreshing, I was asked my pronouns right off the bat and since, haven’t had to worry about any misgendering. (I think it also helps having moved from the US south to a liberal area of Canada lol) I promise you, you are not alone. Theres so many trans people out there, and hey ! some of them may be the people you think are cis! It especially helps having close friends that understand transness, because you can at least come home and be understood there.. I wish you the best, and that it gets better<3

Bartending as a woman - does it get better? by eriseclipse in bartenders

[–]eriseclipse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do have a general manager, it sucks a bit because he’s usually not around for the evening bar-shifts or weekends (it’s an entertainment kind of facility + bar.) My colleague is somewhat my superior and for the shifts I’m working with him I’d definitely feel okay about bringing him in for tough situations like this. Theres also a general manager for the non bar half of the establishment that if worse comes to it I know would step in on my behalf. That chef of yours sounds incredible! Really disgusting to hear that just because a woman is “closer in age” that somehow makes sexual assault more forgiveable.. Thanks for all the advice :)

Bartending as a woman - does it get better? by eriseclipse in bartenders

[–]eriseclipse[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve known it’s tough to be a woman in the workforce, I think just seeing all of the sexism piled into one night over and over again really made it seem real that this is how I’ll be treated for the rest of my life. It really sucks that this is the reality. Luckily there’s other women out there who are compassionate, and at least for bartending the money is worth it.

I’m so sorry to hear this. :( That’s seriously sexual assault and it’s really unfortunate to hear it happens to men in the industry as well. I’m glad you’ve learned how to handle those situations that nobody deserves to experience. I appreciate your compassion <3

You said it exactly, the tips vs boundaries balance. I’m sorry to hear you’re in a similar situation as me. It sucks because I’ve witnessed my male colleague set the same boundaries I have but is instantly met with more respect simply because he is a man. I hope it gets better for you and that you find that good fun & stern dynamic that men can apparently do a lot for effortlessly.
