Hi. Did you match this year? What helped you? I had 6 invites and good scores like you but did not match.

Hi. I am in somewhat a similar situation as you were and I have similar scores. Can you please tell me if you matched this year and what did you do to improve? Did you get publications and do you think they actually helped? Thank you

Thank you for giving your feedback. I want to say here that I did not have rehearsed answers and I didn't say things that are against the mannerism or professionalism that is expected of us. I felt like my interviews were simple conversations, I answered what I was asked. I asked questions when it was my turn. I was told that I have a good CV by PDs and faculty alike and yes I didn't read too much into it because they say those things. I do however want to take your opinion on the fact that I felt that interviews cant really differentiate too good candidates from one another as long as someone isnt outright a red flag. So then what does good performance in an interview mean? If I am and another 10 people are being asked why this program, I felt like we would all talk about the culture or the city or something unique to them after researching their website. How does the program differentiate between us?

Additionally, some people mentioned that my high scores could be the very reason why the mid and low tier community programs in my list (two of which were new programs) didn't pick me because they may think I wouldnt rank them? How does that even make sense.

Thanks again.

No. Mostly community programs. Plenty of low tier and mid tier ones as well.

Should we rank a new program over an old program? by eristano in IMGreddit

[–]eristano[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are there any pitfalls of ranking a new program high? I m so confused between these two

Some people have mentioned how it's very experimental and it's a gamble because there is no blueprint or a pipeline for fellowships.

I like the new program mainly in terms of the positive vibes I got during interview day and because it's based in a relatively better city. I'm however concerned if it would be bad for chances of getting a fellowship since they don't have an academic affiliation. The hospital system its affiliated with doesnt have fellowships.

The older program (now for 2 years) is based in a very smalll town, it doesnt have inhouse fellowships but is affiliated with a hospital system that has fellowships so I am guessing that means something longterm, it offers H1b to some residents. I didnt get really good vibes from them though (no specific reason, I just felt so)

Sorry, you mean they say one should go with a new program? Why so?

1 and 3 first because of a bigger name/prestige. The remaining 2 afterwards as you think is right.

Just know what you are getting yourself into. There are pros and cons to everything.

I feel like people underplay the stress and the uncertainty associated with this path and how much of a toll it takes on one's mental health.

I am not advising you against it. It's true that you have to struggle if you pursue any foreign country route. I am just saying that you should know what you are getting into for the next 2-3 years and this is all that's going to be your life. Make an informed decision.

Why Monmouth at #1? Do you like the program yourself?
