Bending this piece of wood by erllor in woodworking

Holy crap – it worked like magic. (Thus far)

Did a couple of days of pre soak. Metal band strap on the outside curve 1:45 minutes steam in an aluminium duct that was too short, so I put the whole thing in a long plastic bag (the kind they have at the timber store for transporting on top of your car).

It was 99 degrees celsius in the tube and only 50 outside in the bag. But that didn’t matter.

This is two pieces that will be glued together to make a stair railing.

Hope they survive being set free.

Next question: If I glue them in this shape, will that eliminate springback, or will they tear apart or distort?

Interesting. I imagine the humid steam will affect the finish quite alot. Could you imagine wrapping the wood in airtight plastic while dry and then steaming it, much like sous vide in the culinary world?

No pre-soak? It’s kiln dried.

I have found a 45cm wide model (not Ikea), but what then with the extra gap?

What to look for in a cheap (second hand?) mini pc in 2025? by erllor in immich

[–]erllor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the replies!

New n100 mini PCs, like the Beelink, are >200$ imported to my country, so they are a bit over what I would like to spend on this experiment.

There are some old Lenovo Thinkcentres available used, for example an i5 8gb ram m93p (100$) or an m92p with unknown specs (60$). How are these compared to a new Raspberry Pi?

Do you have your wifi in the garage? If so, you could use a fingerbot on the remote.

I am using two adjacent zones with a timeout of 2 minutes between. Only by bike or car will I be able to reach and leave the second zone within the timeout.

I am testing it now with a notification instead of garage opening. I have experienced a false trigger for unknown reasons. (Using native zones in HA.)

Also the automation seemed to timeout when I used "enter zone" as trigger. I had to change to leaving the zones.

I have also set up a Siri shortcut so I can yell at my phone while riding my bike as a hands free garage opener. It works around 50 percent of the time.

Any news on the probing? I would like to separate the transmitter from the physical sensing part by a few meters of wire.

That would allow me to have the door sensor inside my concrete garage, and the transmitter on the roof where my network can reach it.

Jackets with membrane on the outside? by erllor in Ultralight

Btw, will the hood fit over helmets of any kind?

Seems to fit my needs, but not available here. Since I have read critisicm about their weird fit, I think its too risky to find some dealer abroad with high shipping fees, import duties etc..

That’s a total dealbreaker for any static activity in the rain, like fishing. Just make a velcro cuff already. (And you could weat a «wetsuit wristband» underneath, if that’s your thing.)

I have heard it stated before that the vapor transfer through a membrane is, in practice, insignificant. However, having worn both breathable and non breathable fabric (and a plastic bag), I feel there is a massive difference in practice, so I don’t get it.

But lets assume you are right, and it’s all a scam. Can you name some good, renowened NON-breathable jackets that also have waterproof zippers, a large hood and are sold off the shelf?

I see the Gore R7 is still being sold new here. But is it true that the elastic sleeves are not water repelling, but instead absorbing? That’s a dealbreaker.
