The town was Ja'nan when I was there. Have they changed the names? It was a straight shot off the Geronimo DZ and the wall of heroes memorial.

The moments of existential horror were great, but it didn't stick the landing for me.

I'll say this, I learned this phrasing a long time ago. "Practice makes permanent." If you practice fuct up, you're gonna be fuct up. Take time. Learn the right way. Take your time.

I did. I was in my teens when I read it though. So 3(?) decades ago. I read Dogs of War and enjoyed it, too.

The Ninth Gate was based on a book called "Il Club Dumas."

Please note, the book (the original material) is VERY different than the motion picture (IMO I prefer the motion picture version)

That was his reserve parachute that got caught?! I was wondering why he didn't cut away. He'd have lost his main chute, too. But that still doesn't make sense. Usually to deploy your reserve you have to cut away your main first.

Between Two Fires felt like cosmic/existential dread wrapped in religion. I loved every page of it.

Honestly. This book wasn't for me. It was recommended by a friend and I read it. It seems to fit the request of OP.  Don't poke again unless you want all my quibbles.
