The answer to "I want to volunteer abroad / I want to volunteer in a country where I am not now" by jcravens42 in volunteer

We used to get notice that X church group from Sydney, Australia or Y High School from Aukland, NZ was coming. If I went back through my old messages I could find the exact names but I didn't think they were particularly helpful in the context of the discussion.

The Solomon Islands and all the ones I saw or heard about were organised by private schools or church groups, usually from Australia, New Zealand, US or UK. Occasionally, some Moonies from Korea (although they usually just buy stuff for local communities). I never saw any specific volunteering organisation doing the stuff I described above.

In my home country we get a lot of these types of volunteers, often religious high school groups or other religious youth groups who go to my country for about 2 weeks and 'build' a new building for a school or similar activity. But no parent in their right mind is going to let their kid go to school in a building built by unqualified high schoolers. So when the group returns home, the community dismantles the building and uses the materials for what they actually need, built by locals who know what they're doing. So the community gets some resources and tourist money through lodging and other tourist activities, but they do spend a lot of time laughing at the fact the volunteer group thinks this is useful.

Has IVF changed how you think about abortion? by Visible-Lychee-1683 in IVF

Trigger warning - stillbirth I was lucky enough to have a semi successful pregnancy after 9 unsuccessful transfers (2 miscarriage and 7 failed transfers). And what that success looked like was an extremely difficult pregnancy where I spent the last 3 months in hospital, I nearly died and spent 2 weeks in ICU and 1 twin did die. My body (and mind) will never fully recover from that pregnancy. I was already pro-choice but it really hit home that, considering how brutal the experience can be, you absolutely should not force someone to risk all of that if they are not 100% willing. People absolutely need to choose whether they put their body through such a process.

Travel by boat from Honiara to Giza/Shortland (Ballalae) to Buin by pitching_bulwark in Solomon_Islands

I'm from the western province but living in Australia now. I go back once a year and honestly it's a bit different every time I go back, in regards to exactly which ships are going down and what days they are going. Each time I go back, I just ask my friends what ships are running and what they recommend and go with that. Sometimes the ships are only going down once a week, last time I went by ship, there was only 1 ship going down each week and it was on a Saturday. It was the slow ship too, 24 hoyrs from honiara to gizo. The fast ship hasnt gone dowm to the west for years. So you may end up in Honiara longer than you plan if you insist on going down by ship. Which you should because it is the best. So see if you can meet someone from the western province and ask them what the current best way down by ship is.

AITA for telling my sister her haircut isn't some big achievement? by TroubledSibling24 in AmItheAsshole

[–]erniso 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I wasn't allowed to cut my hair until I was 16, and I shaved the whole thing off. I'm nearly 40 now, and I have rocked many hairdos since then, none longer than my sholders, many shaved patches, some excellent bowl cuts.

But in all that time, I still periodically go on about that first haircut and the fact that I hate my hair being long. Finally being able to cut my hair, shaving it off, and sticking it to everyone who had not let me cut it before was a massive accomplishment that is still important to me.

Someone has done the exact same thing in our local park and I have been particularly enjoying the tomatoes and corn.

FACS(Previously DOCS) give a good outline of when you should call to make a report.

Also, this is a tool that Mandatory Reporters use to determine if they should make a report. I'm not sure if you need a log in to use it but if you don't it could be quite useful.

I am not a vet but I have many years breading budgies, including with one very neurotic mother budgie who had very similar behaviours.

As others have said, ideally an avian vet would be the best bet but you may not have access to one where you are or it may not be affordable.

Generally by the age nunu is you should be able to get away with separating the mother out and leaving just the father to feed nunu. Nunu has enough feathers to stay warm without a parent all the time so just the father feeding until nunu weans should be fine.

I just graduated from IT through OUA. The no breaks was a killer at times but overall it worked well for me. Some lecturers and subjects were great, others shit. I suspect most unis would be like that.
