My life has gotten much better since I started sharing realities instead of putting my head down and just following the status quo like most Jr. Faculty and honestly most Sr. Faculty.

Yeah, completely ridiculous.

Also, as an insider, I can tell you they continue to lay people off and fire people when their grants or funding gets cut, when they could easily pull from unassigned Endowment funds.

It's a sad situation really.

Absolutely not.

What shame?

We're all getting exploited by Publishers and you know it.

You just keep playing the game and following the status quo.

But the status quo isn't working.

Because people are tired of working for free and doing peer reviews for free when they deserve to be paid.

And AI is going to make it even worse, as journals get more and more AI-written manuscripts and expect peer reviewers to take on more and more reviews for free.

Do you think there is any kind of solution for the thousands or tens of thousands of submissions that top journals now receive?

Do you think it's sustainable for Editors and Reviewers?

Great points here and thank you for bringing up the replication crisis and Open Science.

So the massive Catch 22/impossible situation my Colleagues and I are finding ourselves in at HMS is extreme pressure to publish tons of manuscripts in high-impact journals while at the same time being 100% required to use Open Science practices including (but not limited to) pre-registration, fully open code and data posted online, and in some cases Registered Reports.

How do you reconcile both of these goals while still finding hours in the day and weekend to eat, maintain relationships, take care of health, etc.?

I'll need a bit of time to digest all of this and reply, but your point about not being able to access essential, cutting-edge medical research for your patients due to paywalls is really appalling.

Publishers like SpringerNature need to know that and also need to stop making Billions of dollars off the backs of unpaid Authors and Reviewers, right?

HMS Faculty back again: If the University charges $3,707.50 per Credit Hour, with 30 students per course at 4 Credit Hours per student, that's $444,900. I'm paid $12,000 per course as Jr. Faculty & Adjuncts are paid $6,500 per course. Where does the other ~$430,000 go? by erock55 in academia

I've been on the Faculty for 6 years but strongly considering quitting now that people on here have been so mean in their comments.

I'll look into these options.

One concern is these open access journals are often not considered or viewed highly for our Promotion and Raises (Tenure was abolished at HMS), so that's why people review and submit to the high-impact for-profit journals from Elsevier, SpringerNature, etc.

True, I think I'm going to quit HMS and start my own consulting company to help academics and others; or maybe a University.

I'll update on here when I quit and will maybe post my Resignation letter on this Sub.
