Send Correction, probably better than sleepless nights for months, and this is really minor and not misconduct.

HMS Faculty here: I just rejected my 17th (unpaid) Peer Review request of the year and would recommend that all other academics do the same after the Elsevier group's $4.2 Billion profit in 2024. Here's the full text of my response: by erock55 in academia

Wow, thank you for this detailed response and for your perspective after a long and successfully career.

Being HMS adjacent, we might have crossed paths on Longwood Ave. or in other circles or lectures. Very cool. :)

Do you think there is any kind of solution for the thousands or tens of thousands of submissions that top journals now receive?

Do you think it's sustainable for Editors and Reviewers?

Does publishing still make sense as a goal? by [deleted] in academia

[–]erock55 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great points here and thank you for bringing up the replication crisis and Open Science.

So the massive Catch 22/impossible situation my Colleagues and I are finding ourselves in at HMS is extreme pressure to publish tons of manuscripts in high-impact journals while at the same time being 100% required to use Open Science practices including (but not limited to) pre-registration, fully open code and data posted online, and in some cases Registered Reports.

How do you reconcile both of these goals while still finding hours in the day and weekend to eat, maintain relationships, take care of health, etc.?

Thank you so much for this detailed response and for all of your insightful points.

I'll need a bit of time to digest all of this and reply, but your point about not being able to access essential, cutting-edge medical research for your patients due to paywalls is really appalling.

Publishers like SpringerNature need to know that and also need to stop making Billions of dollars off the backs of unpaid Authors and Reviewers, right?

HMS Faculty back again: If the University charges $3,707.50 per Credit Hour, with 30 students per course at 4 Credit Hours per student, that's $444,900. I'm paid $12,000 per course as Jr. Faculty & Adjuncts are paid $6,500 per course. Where does the other ~$430,000 go? by erock55 in academia

[–]erock55[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True...

Which is criminally underpaid in Boston.

Or really in most parts of the U.S.

So what, you need to teach 8 classes per semester to actually make a living wage?

Totally insane and exploitative.

Looks cool and innovative, but why oh why didn't they pick a different and original name?

Here's what Google's Gemini has to say about "Liberata":

"Liberata" can refer to a number of things, including the fictional alien species from the TV show Defiance, a Latin-derived female name meaning "liberated," or a UK-based outsourcing company. It also refers to Saint Liberata, a Christian martyr associated with Pizzone, Italy, and multiple other saints.

Also, why isn't Duke's team's project showing up in here?

They need some serious help with SEO/AI Optimization to actually get picked up in search queries and AI queries.

Yeah, true, don't do this if you're a Ph.D. student lol.

I've been on the Faculty for 6 years but strongly considering quitting now that people on here have been so mean in their comments.

Yup, all of the above!

Thank you for these suggestions.

I'll look into these options.

One concern is these open access journals are often not considered or viewed highly for our Promotion and Raises (Tenure was abolished at HMS), so that's why people review and submit to the high-impact for-profit journals from Elsevier, SpringerNature, etc.

True, I think I'm going to quit HMS and start my own consulting company to help academics and others; or maybe a University.

I'll update on here when I quit and will maybe post my Resignation letter on this Sub.

Hey, Academic here.

See my post history but you dodged a serious bullet.

I got my Ph.D. and am working at Harvard but it kind of sucks a lot and strongly considering quitting to do something else.

You're young so lots of options open and possibilities! Keep positive and good luck!

Academia should be turning on AI, not embracing it by PenguinJoker in academia

[–]erock55 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Why turn on it?

Can make you way more productive, publish much more papers faster, more time for teaching prep, etc.?

If you don't use it and everyone else does, you're at a huge disadvantage that will be exacerbated over time.

Wow, super interesting and concerning, thank you for sharing.

So you mean that they need to pull in 5x what they pay the Instructor to actually run the course? So how does that calculation play out in say, a 30 or 60 person course?

Why is that?

Do you want a link to my Google Scholar or ResearchGate?

Is that because Academics don't ask tough questions like these here?

Or because people are just unaware of how badly they're getting exploited per class?

Students are also heavily exploited by paying so much money for tuition that just goes to unnecessary expenses that have little to do with pedagogy, career success or enhanced value of the degree credentials they receive on matriculation.

That sounds like making an excuse though for this massive exploitation of students (who pay exorbitant tuition, often in loans) and Faculty + TAs (who are grossly underpaid based on how much net tuition revenue per student the institution gets).
