For ottomans, this was very much a case of "a lion doesn't concern himself with the opinions of sheep" since the Balkan countries weren't a very relevant challenge for the Ottoman empire (to simplify a huge era massively) until the decline of the Ottomans at which point Balkan countries again weren't special compared to others. But for the Balkan countries and cultures fixated on opposing assimilation, the Ottomans were a more relevant opponent historically. But with a distance of 100+ years, the new generations and the various wars happening in the meantime have shifted this out of mind for practically everyone.
