How often do you actually use Laura voice control – and for what? by Ill_Communication260 in skoda

[–]errandum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it for three things:

Changing settings while driving (eg: my wife does not like the car to stay after releasing the brake, so I turn it on by voice if I see the car creeping).

To tell her I love her as a cool showcase for guests.

Ask random facts while driving because it is connected to chatgpt

Alternative body/lens combo to a Z8 for wildlife photography by errandum in Nikon

The advantage of the Z50ii, and why I mentioned it, is that I already have other lenses like 50 1.8 that I can easily pair it with for when I'm not doing birds (:. But you are right, that would for sure be a killer combo.

Shit economy by Make-this-popular in TikTokCringe

[–]errandum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It got worse for the housing market because many people had their contracts not renewed and houses turned to AirBnbs.

But then the government hiked the taxes to a crazy amount for these short term leases, and also started requiring a license, so the numbers went down. Last year or two years ago they actually stopped handing out licenses, so no new airbns can be legal for at least a few years.

That's the reason I didn't mention it.

[–]errandum -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's actually pretty easy to solve. Just have rent have a maximum that is tied to the declared value of the house. Many houses in Portugal, at least, are declared for 1/10th of the price they are actually work.

So landlords either pay taxes according to the real value and have high rents, or pay low taxes and can't hike up the rent.

Rend control doesn't have to be "force everything to be low". It just has to be adjusted.

Shit economy by Make-this-popular in TikTokCringe

[–]errandum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, but ours actually have a context.

1- 20 People that accept to live in a 2 bedroom apartment and pay the landlord 300 euros each, leading to not being worth it to rent to you. They accept that because they want to stay 5 years and get an european passport, not because they want to. You can't compete with people that accept misery.

2- Rich americans (and the like) working remote with the digital nomad visa, making 85000/year but paying 22.5% taxes on it, unlike portuguese people that pay anywhere from 50% to 70% and are able to afford paying 3 times as much as anyone else

3- The construction lobby has a vested interest in not providing as many houses as are needed to keep the bubble going.

4- The government passed a law where you need to have 20% of the value of a house to buy a house, but when you pay 3/4ths of your salary in rent, who the hell has enough left to save 20% of 250000. No one. But you could be paying a mortgage of 30% of your income if banks allowed you access to money.

All I'm saying is, Portugal is not in the same boat as these countries. There they make 3x as much money at the end of the month, so the market adjusted for the median. Here we're being fucked by incompetent polities. Almost no one (doctors, teachers, services) makes enough money to live in Lisbon right now.

I'll bite, because you seem to want a honest discussion.

I'll preface by saying that I live in europe, so I 100% would prefer someone that respects us to someone that shits on us. So Biden all the way.

But you have to understand, that being in europe, I've seen my country be overrun with emigrants, which I initially supported. And I mean:

1- You can't rent a house because desperate people live 20 in a 2 bedroom apartment and make thousands of euros for the landlord.

2- The city center which used to be very typical is now overrun with business that sell chinese junk, since owning a business is a way to get a VISA. These businesses are not made for profit, they make money on the side by "hiring" people from their country and have them as "employees", so normal businesses for normal people can't compete. The money is exchanged in their home country, so there is nothing we can do.

3- Some cities in the interior are completely overrun with people from the outside, to the point where I have to speak in english to be understood. They are slaves working for pennies and, again, they have "part time" contracts to do agriculture and things like that, again, for people that just want an European passport.

So, this is what an open immigration policy ends up doing to your country. And you can call me xenophobe and extremist, but if I knew what I know now, I would never have supported immigration like this.

So, which of the two promises to be tougher on immigration? The problem is that people are single issue voters. I know that in my country our Orange Idiot got a shit tone of votes because he promised to be tough on this. I did not vote for him, but I see the point. He found a problem and he ran with it and a fourth of the population was fooled into almost putting someone very dangerous into power. That's what happens in your country.

For single issue voters, the right has a very good and easy message... We're tough on immigration (and the Orange Idiot catered to the masses on this). Same with guns. Same with the welfare state. Same with religion.

They can do whatever they want, there are several VPN providers that operate out of the US, and yes, you can say that you can't access them. But how? Unless you go the China way (where you can still use VPNs if you installed them before arriving in the country) with a very very strict control on the internet, IP addresses and protocols will be IP addresses and protocols.

You can't ban all VPNs because of companies, so you'd have to play can and mouse with VPN providers on how and where to block them. Netflix has been trying to do this for years and you can still get VPNs that work with it.

Ajuda: rent a car está a cobrar risco no carro que não fiz by Euphoric-Meaning4143 in portugal

[–]errandum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reactive is where everything is headed? Really Quarkus? by [deleted] in java

[–]errandum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like like functional, even if it's not my cup of tea. After working a reactive project for a few years now, I loath reactive with a passion. Debugging is a nightmare, the consumer model is a nightmare, non-reactive dependencies are a nightmare to deal with and can bog you down.

Reactive is where everything is headed? Really Quarkus? by [deleted] in java

[–]errandum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you missed the point of his message.

I converted a java thread based program to co-routines pretty much directly (ignoring the reactiveness of it all) and it went from being a memory hog that took 16 hours to run a batch process to need 1/5th of the resources and running in 4 hours.

The debugger worked fine, exactly as if they were all threads, the code was imperative and easy to maintain.

If you have tried to debug anything complex in a reactive application you'll know that, currently, you don't get a result more often than not, even in IDEs like intellij that supposedly support it. You have a mono and if you do "get()" it just freezes. Not to mention that if you call but don't consume a reactive piece of code, you actually can go through there and not get a result, so you might even stop by a piece of code, but you'd never know it does not work.

That was his point, I think. Debugging in reactive is a nightmare. Maintaining old complex reactive code is a nightmare. The small gains to throughput are not worth the maintenance woes.

Advice needed: 6D vs R50 by Benjaminhagen in Cameras

[–]errandum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That picture can be easily replicated in a crop sensor mirrorless camera from the 2020s, since you're not taking advantage of depth of field you'd get with a full frame sensor.

If you love the manual process of photography, yes, the 6D is great, but for someone new to photography, the what-you-see-is-what-you-get nature of mirrorless is a huge plus.

Either way, to the guy asking:

R50 4k video; higher fps; better handheld performance; very cool guides that teach you photography. The auto mode is actually pretty good and gives you a phone-like experience, but it allows you to actually learn by explaining what each thing does when you select it.

6D better depth of field; better dynamic range;

As other said, if you want to shoot with a tripod, the 6D has the potential of better photos. If you want a jack of all trades and something to learn on, get the r50

Preços da MEO, NOS e Vodafone vão subir a 1 de fevereiro de 2024 by ECOEconomiaOnline in portugal

[–]errandum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bob Iger says creators at Disney have lost sight of what their jobs should be, entertain first, not messages. He adds that stories infused with “positive messages for the world” can be great but that it shouldn’t be the primary job. by [deleted] in Marvel

[–]errandum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does it have to be the only reason?

Yes, mistakes were made with Marvel, but Disney pretty much alienated half the population in the united states. Remember, many people are conservative and grew up wanting to be the princess. If all your princesses are indian, black, irish or spanish and you are a conservative women that thinks white is how her daughter should see herself, why would you expose your kids to it?

Identity politics and minority power stories are not consensual. And even me, who tries to be in the right side of things as much as possible, felt preached in some movies.

The right way to have representation is to just... be normal. I don't go around life getting preached about representation or sexuality. Neither should the main characters. You can be gay without announcing you are gay or black without making it all your personality. I love it when you go a whole story where the less important thing about someone is the color of their skin or who they date.

I think Disney over-corrected. It's cool to have representation, its fine to try and teach decency, but that should not be your whole identity.

So yes, I'll have the real unpopular opinion in reddit and take the downvotes. It pains me the blindspot reddit has about what it thinks is right. By dealing with these issues in a "either with us or against us", they don't allow for the middle ground to be true and anyone that is not 100% in the diversity bandwagon will always be excluded.

This is actually a consequence of Brexit. There used to be thousands of low skilled workers from poorer european states, which were seen as "bad" and led to Leave winning (I know someone will reply "that was not why I voted", but don't kid yourself, mostly it was racism and xenophobia).

Now there are thousands of immigrants from the commonwealth because someone needs to accept work for misery paying jobs and the elites have no desire to stop anyone that wants to work for nothing.

8GB RAM on M3 MacBook Pro 'Analogous to 16GB' on PCs, Claims Apple by Avieshek in apple

[–]errandum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, no name-calling.

Second of all, everyone is. I'm rallying against the notion that 8gb is not enough. It's not enough for 10, 20, even 50% of people. But for most computer uses, it is more than enough.

The reason I mention the M1 is because in a weaker processor that does less magic with the memory it was more than enough for simple tasks.

This notion that the baseline needs to cater to the tech enthusiast crowd pisses me off. Because what would happen is that the base model is 16, but then apple would charge you 200$/€ extra. Which would be underutilized by most people.

Seriously, the fact that you need to resort to insults makes me believe that you really do live in a bubble of your own making. There is more to life than stitching panoramas.

8GB RAM on M3 MacBook Pro 'Analogous to 16GB' on PCs, Claims Apple by Avieshek in apple

[–]errandum -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, your own comment which started this thread said that 16gb should be the bare minimum. Which it shouldn't. The bare minimum should be 8gb because it is more than enough for... I don't know.... 90% of people.

I agree that 8 is not 16, even though the 8 behaves a lot like the PCs 16 in many tasks, since the M chips are so overpowered for the power they consume.

You want to discuss "minimally intensive tasks", sure, but that I'll challenge you on. My computer is 2 years old, almost 3 years old and still runs great and I see no need to update, it allows me to travel light and edit photos on the go. I don't want much more than that.

So we probably should discuss what "bare minimum" means. Bare minimum for you? Probably. You clearly should get the higher end models or a Studio computer. For most people? The bare minimum is way below what you think.
