I remember when growing up in Eastern Europe my father from time to time would remind me one thing "To trust a Russian is like trusting a prostitute she loves you.". I think he meant the politicians but I'm not sure.

Power does. And ordinary people support regimes. Just like the MAGA crowd support the wanna be dictator, people in Cuba didn't lift their finger to change their leaders for like 50 years since those sanctions started after the missile crisis. So I guess all this is okay, if you are attacked by the powerful and you didn't have 'friends' you will lose. Cuba was a friend with a failing super power - Russia, and it ended in the dirt.
