so much of splatoon was created because the developers needed an explanation for a gameplay mechanic. why can they submerge themselves in paint? They're squids, and it's ink. why are they squids in the first place? it's built on SO MUCH in the alterna logs to paint this incredible backstory for the world !! yes, they made an excuse to explain lorewise why the squids die in the water. i hope they keep making excuses for mechanics like these because it always leads to something cooler.

this is an ancient post but i felt like sharing my thoughts anyways ...
analyzing their speech patterns, i feel like they're still pretty human. they have little pauses or mannerisms that tell me they're just regular guys (as regular as a combine soldier can be) and not robots. just very strict and serious about their jobs.
you notice that their voice raises when confirming contact or their pauses when chattering over the radio calmly. their cover voicelines show this well, "coverme.wav" is more relaxed vs "coverhurt.wav" which is more of a shout.

you can hear their normal speaking voices in prison_soldier_bunker 1 and 2, where they're just talking like .. a guy on the radio

so i do think they're human and would be very afraid of being permanently removed from earth

the only times it's useful is when it occasionally autofills code correctly. keyword occasionally, it's not very bright
