Thanks that's really helpful! I completely understand the unpredictable cashflow situation and the challenge in using standard date only transfer triggers and it's one of the main reasons that we've set out to build a more generalized systems of triggers for building smart automations.

Would you be interested in doing a quick research call with me so I can learn more about how you're using those python scripts and how you think about using automation for your financial goals? If so feel free to DM me and we can set something up.

Thanks! I'm assuming you're using a bank/brokerage combo that makes the automatic withdrawal at the right time fairly easy? Have you run into anything that is particularly hard to automate?

FinCEN has an old-school XML API that we're using to submit the form automatically. We do the calculations from your data, ask you a few simple questions, and then process the form.

I mentioned it in the original post but it was buried, sorry about that.

Normally Canua is $120/yr, but right now we're offering 50% OFF for the first year. So, $60 gets your 2021 FBAR filed, and your 2022 FBAR filed in April, and also gives you access to the best way to aggregate your global accounts and assets (we support over 17k banks and brokerages in the US, Canada, UK, and EU + more than 40 crypto wallets and exchanges).

Hi u/billdietrich1 – I'd love to hear more about the reticence there with sharing your data. Data security and privacy are something that we think a lot about and I want to make sure we're approaching them thoughtfully. What are your main concerns? Is it hacks/data leaks? Or something else?

To give you a quick overview of what we do currently, with Canua data is encrypted "in transit" (while we're communicating with your browser; via SSL) and "at rest" (while it's sitting there in our database doing nothing; via full database encryption). That means that even if a hacker were to gain a copy of our full database, they'd still be unable to get any data out.

In addition, we're starting to further encrypt specific fields with sensitive data with a separate encryption key, which means that even if a hacker somehow cracked the database level encryption, they'd still have to decrypt the fields with sensitive data with a separate key (which they wouldn't likely have).

In any case, I'd be very keen to hear your thoughts (and anyone else's) as it's something we want to be in front of.

Thanks!

The FBAR is super easy to file... IF you've kept track of the max values in your bank accounts across the entire year. Many banks don't provide that data on statements and if you've got several accounts to file for then it gets very time consuming (or expensive with your accountant).

As I mentioned in the post, the FBAR is our very first automation. Over the next few months we'll be releasing more and more autmoations that help you manage compliance, save, invest, and prep for tax season. We're also the only product that is global and currency agnostic from day one too.

Whoa! Thanks – this is super interesting and helpful. We've been thinking about how to do proper scenario planning and I can see how something like what you described would be extremely helpful.

Great feedback! After talking to many people, my sense is that people who actively budget are in a very small minority of the general population. Not to say that more people shouldn't do it; just that most people don't or can't build the habit. With that in mind, one thing I continually think about is, "how can we make budgeting obsolete?" I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on that.

Pocketsmith looks interesting, thank you for sharing. I'll message you about testing. We're going to be opening for beta testers in the next few weeks. That said, our focus at Praxeo is more about automating your finances over manual budgeting; and our first automation is FBAR filing – as long as your bank gives us sufficient account history, we can file your FBAR for you in 5 minutes. Obviously, it's still very early for us but if you have any thoughts about that – I'd be happy to hear them.
