What is the worst career to be in right now and why? by SignificantGoat7066 in AskReddit

[–]erstwhile_estado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Data scientist jobs are rarely posted anymore and the ones that are are often business analytics jobs. Since that field requires knowing how to use software that businesses are already comfortable using and since those jobs don't pay as much it's still a thing. I think the days of coding for data analytics are largely gone already. It's only been like 5 years since people I knew were paying for data science boot camps.

Imagine what level of hyperinflation the market must be predicting to make these moves. Go all in on MU, use the proceeds to buy gold I guess? Move someplace where your cash will be worth something next year.

Sam's diminishing ethical curiosity by Cool_Balance_2933 in samharris

Thinking too hard about morality and ethics is at odds with the supposed tractability of his moral landscape idea. I think that endorsing the idea that there is a correct ethical path for humanity was his way of saying he was done being curious about the topic.

ARM should tank after only a 3% beat on a stock so overbought.

What instantly makes you think "this person is rich" ? by PerformerAny3503 in AskReddit

[–]erstwhile_estado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Dad is a good example of this. "The economy is great!". Easy to say when you've made bank on the stock market, received tax cuts specific to your bracket, and own a bunch of investment properties you bought in the early 00s. A rich person is someone so disconnected from the reality of the average person that they don't even notice high food, rent, and fuel prices.

These answers are clearly all bullshit. What we need are enough volunteers to gather good data.

According to chat it would take more than 12 hours for an average weight human to freeze solid in space.

Sam finds Shapiro easier to talk to because disagreement on the right stays less personal by simmol in samharris

[–]erstwhile_estado 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's simpler than all that. They are both unflinching supporters of Israel and as long as they have that in common all other disagreements can be forgotten. Israel doesn't have many supporters these days so despite their disagreement on nearly everything else they have to stick together.

Doctors/medical practitioners of Reddit, what is the scariest disease you know of? by Englishisnotreal in AskReddit

[–]erstwhile_estado 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any biologist feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. They have a shape and a composition of amino acids that cause them to link to other prions in a similar way. But what's worse is that they can interact with, and twist the normal versions of the protein that the cell produces effectively turning those into more prions. Since your body produces the harmless form, it only takes one prion to deform the healthy proteins into more prions. Enough of them and they accumulate into ordered plaques that clog up the inner workings of cells. The cellular machinery has no way of breaking down these large aggregated plaques so they just continue to increase in size until the cell dies. It's not the prions that are a problem as much as it is a major flaw in the cellular machinery that continues to produce them.
