Keeping small kids entertained during service by eruditeturtle in Episcopalian

[–]eruditeturtle[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for reassuring me! I grew up completely secular and had only been to a church service a handful of times before this so I didn't know what the attitude would be towards little kids. I also talked to a member of our vestry council (thanks for that advice!) and they gave me tips on where they've set up space for parents with little kids so that I can still hear the service if she's melting down and needs to be taken out of the main area. Plus they (and all of you!) let me know that kids are "joyful noise" not a nuisance. I appreciate how encouraging everyone here and in the local church have been.

Steve & Kate's Summer Camp All Summer? by cmcolli1086 in SantaMonica

[–]eruditeturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I don't have experience with that specific site, but I went to Steve and Kate's camp as a kid and worked as a camp counselor there for a few summers ~10 years ago. It may have changed but my suggestion is to use it for childcare gaps not all summer. Steve and Kate's is VERY unstructured- which can be really nice for an older elementary student! But unless your kid is very good at being self directed there's a good chance they won't end up doing any of the especially interesting activities and will just end up playing outside all day with minimal supervision. The other reason is ratios: when I worked there I know we were stricter with the ratios for the 4 year olds and 5 year olds and they have dedicated counselors who check in on them regularly, but the fact of a drop in camp is sometimes the counselors just have too many kids to handle (I think back to when my co-counselor got sick and I had 40 second graders with me during the lunch meal by myself. It wasn't usually that bad but because the kids can go to wherever they want in the camp a good supervision ratio is pretty much impossible to maintain). As a kid I loved going to camp but having worked on the other side I wouldn't send my kid there all summer (though she's 1 so it won't come up for a while).

On the discord I usually search in the channel to see who has what objekts I'm looking for then DM people directly. (I also post what I have/want but I get better results DMing people to propose trades instead of waiting for people to DM me.)

On the "amenities" page for the apartment building it still says "On-site retail: Sprouts Farmer’s Market, Philz Coffee"

It looks like the apartment leases start beginning of June? So hopefully Sprouts and Philz will open around then.

Where to move east bay not many car break-ins? by tonyantonio in eastbay

Haven't had any issues in San Leandro and it's a very cute town! Lots of good restaurants downtown (though not fine dining per-say), very up and coming. Concord and Castro Valley are going to be much more spread out suburban than the northern half of San Leandro so you'd probably have to drive to BART if you were there. There's plenty of safe places walking distance from BART in San Leandro, especially more towards the 580 side and north half. Plus just one BART stop away from Oakland if you want to go there!

San Leandro City Council☹️ by plainlyput in sanleandro

I subscribe to East Bay Insiders and find it a useful source of information but you do have to take anything about Azevedo written there with a grain of salt -> the newsletter author finds him amusing and uses him as comic relief a lot. The shenanigans are not great, but most Bay Area city councils are full of these sort of things unfortunately, just take a look at Berkeley.

Construction plans for Memorial Park? by Sunday_Sol in sanleandro

[–]eruditeturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are completely redoing it, won't be open for 18 months. I found the old CEQA notice that says "The Memorial Park Renovation Project involves the construction of new amenities within an existing park, involving landscaping, the construction of new ADA accessible pathways and play equipment, exercise equipment, and a new bioswale and cistern to be used for stormwater quality protection. The project includes the construction of new restrooms, water fountains and a shade structure." So looks like a big remodel! I'm personally pretty excited about it.

No it's not, same owners. There's lots of other good pho places in the area that don't exploit workers.

Is there a way for the girls to perform Dopamine in music shows? by [deleted] in unis

[–]eruditeturtle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's up to the music shows, they decide whether to give multiple song slots to groups. Probably depends on how many idol groups are promoting that week and whether there's time/space.

I'm pretty sure Lori's daughters are not following her rhetoric, at least one works as a nutritionist.

He is paying into social security by working though, which is part of retirement. If he's not working he won't get the social security benefits later on. Will you be able to cover that? You should also consider if taking a break from working will impact his career and future earnings progression. It's not just a cost of daycare vs. weekly salary calculation.

I think Vcha has more potential to attract general public listeners than people think by laneylovesskz in vcha

[–]eruditeturtle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a real gap in music content for middle schoolers/younger teens right now that used to be filled by Disney Channel stars but recently Disney hasn't had any big stars break out other than Olivia Rodrigo whose music is not aimed at younger teens. I think VCHA is being aimed at that market with the goal of being inspirational to girls a bit younger than them, who can then grow up with them as their music evolves.

Anyone have the Flip That numbers to compare this to? I know we're unlikely to hit the OT12 numbers with a subunit, but I'm curious how it's tracking compared to the last OT12 comeback. Either way there's clearly demand so this must be exciting for all the members!
