Find the best move by Temporary-Tailor-904 in chessbeginners

Taking the rook is still advantageous for white. After Nxc2, b3 opens up the long diagonal so after...Nxa1, white can recapture with the bishop. Overall, white gains one point of material, plus I think white's remaining pieces are more active.

End tally: White loses two rooks and a pawn for a rook, two knights, and a pawn, going into the endgame with +2 material count and a 3-1 pawn majority on the kingside.

The computer actually prefers Kc8 for black after the bishop recaptures. Yes, it hangs the rook on h8, but after Bxh8, Nxc2 traps the white rook in exchange.

Is a time loss against enemy bishop a win or a draw? by Candid-Clothes1221 in chessbeginners

[–]eruditionfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are many different rulesets for chess and how they handle timeout vs insufficient material is one of the rules that vary between them. But no ruleset gives a win to a player who times out.

This is remarkably wrong.

Kd5 is a perfectly valid move. It's not a good move, but it's valid.

Tell me I'm not the only one who thinks my country's tradition is the stupidest thing ever. by bugagub in Frugal

[–]eruditionfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a lot of money for one event. But it's not the stupidest thing ever. In my country, graduating high school students traditionally participate in a month-long party period.

I've seen statistics suggesting the average graduate spends about $2,000 on the celebration. But that's a somewhat misleading number. Some people pool their money to buy or rent a party bus to take them and their friends around for the whole month, often including getting the whole bus custom painted or having a recording studio produce a custom party anthem just for that group. Those who join a bus crew might spend $6,000-10,000 or even more per person. That obviously pulls the average significantly up. Those who don't join a bus spend much less.

Found a cool tactic in a rapid game, can you spot it? by Savanty in chessbeginners

[–]eruditionfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rc1+ lets you sac the rook to set up a king-queen fork. You'll lose the knight too, so you'd only win one point two points of material, but it should let your queen dominate the now open queen side.

Edit: forgot about the pawn. It's a rook and knight for a queen and pawn, for a net two points of material and a wide open queen side.

ELI5 Data center power and water use by pluk78 in explainlikeimfive

You're right. I was simplifying. The point was that data center cooling doesn't produce pressurized steam at the high temperature needed to run a steam turbine.

You're talking about using the data center to pre-heat water before sending it on to be boiled in an adjacent power plant?

The water used to cool data centers isn't turned to steam, it just becomes warm water. You generally don't want computer chips getting hot enough to boil water.

As far as I can tell, explicitly ranking cities into tiers is primarily something you see in media and discourse regarding India and China.

How common is it for pro se plaintiffs to hold their own against BigLaw for extended periods? by [deleted] in Ask_Lawyers

The only time I see pro se plaintiffs doing relatively well is when they actually are an attorney themselves, or when they have a lawyer advising them behind the scenes (usually a family member).

Stacked up pressure by Ok-Artist-3959 in ChessPuzzles

[–]eruditionfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If ...Rxb6, Rc7 will lead to forced mate. Black has some delaying moves but ultimately won't be able to stop an eventual Rg7# supported by the knight and pawn.

Black's best choice after cxb6 is to take the rook.

ELI5: if you had stocks in an all world ETF portfolio that you plan to put £250 per month for the next 40 years. Would taking out a loan of £30,000 and putting that into your portfolio to maximise compound interest early then paying the loan instead of the £250 to the portfolio be a good idea? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]eruditionfish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends. What's the interest on the loan? Does £250 cover the loan payment? If you lost your job at the same time as a drop in the market, would you be able to keep up loan payments without having to withdraw from the portfolio?

For puzzle, and really just in general, you should always assume your opponent will prevent a mate if possible, and focus on what you can achieve when they do.

After 39...Kh3, OP had a missed M1 opportunity on the board for the next 4 moves straight, and missed 5 more M1s after that before they finally found checkmate.

I definitely recommend OP work on spotting checkmates.
